A PIG WITH LIPSTICK ~ TALE OF THE OVERDRESSED HOUSE!

Clown

Remember the Drew Carey Show? One of the characters, Mimi was larger than life! She had big hair and a ton of makeup! Where am I going with this? When showing a very high-end home yesterday, upon walking in the front door Mimi came to mind immediately.

Now I certainly don't mind a variety of decor types but am always amazed when house are "over done"! This particular home was overdone so much so that it was difficult to get past all of it in order to truly appreciate the home. Every wall was faux painted to the max, huge flowery decorations were on every wall and there was so much furniture that it was hard to maneuver in the home.

To put it bluntly, it was overkill and completely distracting. My client commented that she was overwhelmed. I do believe this home needs a complete make-over for sure! Time to tone it down!

An over- dressed and over made-up home is distracting when you are trying to sell your home. If I were the listing agent on this home, I would suggest to the owner to hire a professional stager to come and help them prepare the home to be on the market.

Assess the home from a third party who has a critical eye for what sells. Thin out the decor and pack it away. Remove extra pieces of furniture. Open up heavy drapery or perhaps remove it if necessary.

When selling your home, yes it needs to look pleasing to the eye however, over-dressing it can distract. Just remember that your collections and decor may not be the best thing when trying to sell. Your decor is your personal style yet if distracting, listen to your agent and bring the tone down in order to sell your home.

Call met Chevaux Group if you would like to list or buy real estate in The Woodlands or surrounding area. I know the market and I know how to get a home in its best condition in order to get it sold. Give me a call today.

A pig with lipstick? Never a pleasant thought!

Paula - while I've often seen Mimi types of houses, I never called them that until right now :)

The term the Mimi house has just been coined. The younger generation may not remember this show. Perhaps I need to keep a picture of her on my iPad. Thank you all for stopping by. Have a super week.

Sometimes less is more...especially when you are trying to sell your home.  It is our job to tactfully let sellers know what needs to go in order to present their home at its' best.

I can just imagine what that home looked like.  Your analogy and comparison to Mimi from the Drew Carey Show helped me with the visuals :)

An overdone house like the one you described swamps one, makes it hard to breathe even. Not a good idea!

I have seen some recently. One my client said looked like a "dressy New Orleans whore house"...His words as I have never been in one!

AMEN! And this holds true whether home is  a high end property in The Woodlands or a cabin beside the water in Riverside! TOO much of anything is NOT a good thing when selling a home! BRAVO, Paula!

Paula, I showed a house on Monday that I had previously shown 3 years ago. It has been on and off the market for the last three years. The decorating is very taste specific. I gave the same feedback I gave 3 years ago. The decor has to go. This seller won't do it. I don't suspect it will ever sell.

Hello Paula,

Buyers need to be able to see the house, distractions lose sales!

Oh my, I saw one of these homes too...they wanted to do a busy type of swirly tile to go with the swirly walls and countertops and cabinets.  I had never seen anything quite like it.  It actually reminded me of a matisse painting.

Paula, that's a great way to put it.  I see them from time to time, and they are distracting.  I find that my sellers get so distracted they forget to look a the house.  They end up spending their whole time finding the next surprise.  Yeow!

Too underdressed and it doesn't show well.   Too overdressed and you're right, a pig with lipstick.  Buyers have a very hard time seeing past both extremes.  Good other side of the coin Paula.

Paula, so true. Sellers need to look at their homes with a critical eye and remove themselves from their own personal tastes. You described it in such a way that I can visualize it quite well.

Paula -- been there and shown some of these Mimi homes --- most times, less will definitely bring more $$$ to the bottom line.

Describing the home as being like Mimi, would suggest not bothering at all. That's terrible

Paula - I've seen homes like you describe, and it's very hard to get past the decorating and see the home for what it truly is.

Oh my it sounds as if you all have those types of home in your market areas as well.   The one we saw looked a bit overdone in the photos but the true picture was actually being there.  They did a good job not showing it all in the pictures.  The surprise is upon entering and being met with larger than life decor.  It was interesting and so displeasing.  Thanks for stopping by all!
