Some Days It Just Doesn’t Make Sense

“The difference between fiction and reality?

Faction has to make sense.”

Jim Clancy, author

As I see it . . . . . . .

Some days it just doesn’t make sense.

The phone rang a little before 6:30 am it’s a customer that had just purchased a home.

The customers had signed the agreement to purchase their dream home 2 days earlier and been qualified and everything was a go.

When I answered the phone the customer advised me that they no longer wanted to buy the home. They wanted me call the other Realtor® and tell her that they had changed their mind and to cancel the sale.

I asked him are you sure? And he responded with yes he was.

The phone call at 6:30 am in the morning didn’t make sense.

So I went about my day and he called me back about 10:00 at night and said that they had changed their mind and wanted the home. He also asked me if it would be a problem? I replied to him that I would hope not.

Now I heard a sense of concern in his voice and he said could we lose the home? Which I replied with there is always a chance that you can lose the home. But I’ll do my best and call him the next day.

The next evening I called the buyers back to let them know everything was on track and that we would be closing on the home on time.

Now for the rest of the story . . . .

1.     I had known the customers for a number years and a 6:30 am telephone call was out of character for them and did not make sense.

2.     The contract had a specific performance clause in it and all the conditions were met.

3.     I did not call the other Realtor® because the call didn’t make sense and we had a valid contract.

A couple of days later the customers call me to apologize for the call and he explained that they had gotten into an argument and he get mad and called me to cancel the sale. Now that made sense.

I did call the other Realtor® and explained what had happen and why I didn’t call her, she laughed and life when on and the home closed.

Some days it just doesn’t make sense, but we have to make the best of the conditions we face and we have to be careful not to overreact or to lose our composure.

Lou- excellent.  I think everything went well in no small part because you didn't react but used your head and what you knew of the clients.  Very interesting story and at the end.. yes that 6:30 am called made a little more sense.

I've been seeing more and more of buyers backing out of contracts emotionally instead of thinking things through. I'm glad your story worked out.

Lou, I got a call like that once as a new agent, and I did what the buyer asked.  And the same thing happened!  They called back to undo the damage.  Now I wait a bit.

Lou, I can visualize that phone call and I am glad you had the wisdom not to immediately call and get sale cancelled(although they were locked in).

Hi Lou, a little mind reading goes hand in hand in real estate. Buyer's remorse or a family

argument just adds a little excitment to the deal. Have a good day.

Buying a home is a huge event in the lives and many buyers. The stress level goes WAY up! You described a perfect example of the stress felt by these buyers.

I am glad this worked out well for everyone.

Lou, there's always something in this wild and wacky real estate world, isn't there? Glad you were able to still help them get the house.
