Coronado High School Watching the Waldo Canyon Fire on June 25th

Prior to 4 pm yesterday, the fire seemed to be off at a distance.   Throughout the day, some residents sought different vantage points to view the fire.  Some expressed relief that the fire was actually further away than it appeared from their neighborhood.   Mesa Avenue, Coronado High School and the Colorado Springs Utilities Xeriscape Gardens were all popular places for evacuees, residents, media and tourists to watch the C-130s and helicopters fighting the fire.

Everyone was relieved that no one had been hurt and no homes had been destroyed.

Then while the twice daily 4 pm press conference was in progress, things changed suddenly.  The fire that seemed far off came over the ridge.   Smoke filled the air making it impossible, or at least from my vantage point, to see how fast the fire was approaching.  This time, there wasn’t another ridge or two between the homes and the fire.

As the evacuation occurred, it was still evident that the city had rehearsed what they would do in the event that such as a disaster occurred.  Police manned intersections while fire trucks assembled at what appeared to be predetermined staging points.

My prayers are with everyone that has been directly and indirectly affected by these fires.

Sondra-This is the 3rd post I have read from different bloggers in the past few days from the CO area.  Shortly before I read yours I read Jon Eliason's post who lives in Pagosa Springs and a couple days ago from long time AR friend Mary Douglas from Red Feathers Lake CO. She just had to evacuate on Friday and doesn't know when she will be able to come home.   When Mother Nature is involved life can turn on a dime. It is scary with these fires being so big and so out of control. This is great info for people. I hope where you are you are safe. Take care and all your AR friends are praying you stay safe and away from this terrible disaster.

The pictures say it all with the scariness of the advancing fires on Colorado Springs Sondra. It went over that last ridge and went from a wild fire out in the woods to a "residential" fire talking out ranches and homes. I have seen many pictures here and on Facebook from our fellow bloggers and REALTORS and it is truly tragic. Thanks for your updates as well and reporting the numbers which really brings the vast scope of this fire to the forefront and how it is impacting so many lives. Stay safe yourself with your running around documenting this.

Sondra, Good luck down there. Those big fires are real monsters. I am in fire country here in Washington State and we have a local Hotshot Team that is down in New Mexico right now fighting that fire.

I have been through several of fires over the years and it really is just no fun.

Sondra, I've read this post twice and have been interrupted from responding to you promptly. We have had 2 evacuee families and their dogs staying with us since Tuesday night. Everyone went home last night and we are thanking the lord for the new 45% containment news! You did a commendable job relaying to everyone how they can help. Thank you! It has to get better from here on out, right? That's my hope.

Just checking back in with you Sondra and hoping all is getting a little better in your neck of the woods. You would be amazed literally how your news becomes our news. Yesterday they showed us all these families lined up on the sidewalks with posters and cheering the firetrucks, water trucks, and even these yellow school buses filled with firefighters to show their appreciation for saving their homes. The expanse of the disaster can't only be told in the numbers. Latest I heard, two had died, 27 square miles burned, 400 homes destroyed, and as Kim said above about 45% contained and also the National Guard called out to help police with traffic control. Other Colorado Springs REALTORS I have talked to said we will get through this. With fire, on the positive side, forests will re-grow, new homes will be built. Life moves on. The best we can hope out of this is the minimum in loss of life or injury for everyone. GREAT, "very" helpful post with your links!!!

Sondra~

Been thinking about you...Sharon put it so well up above. This is a very thoughtful post. It's so like you to put the focus on how to help.

(Been busy around here, got under the weather, too,--geesh, sorry for the bad pun--haven't been able to keep up with my AR friends like you).

I hope to talk w/you soon, friend.
