When you are a kid and you discover the power of money, life becomes very interesting indeed. Now, all those things that you see that you want can be yours with little or no effort. For me, it was the paper route or delivering newspapers. I already was riding a bicycle all over town all day long, so when I found out you can get paid..GET PAID?
IT'S WAITING FOR YOU
I contact the local guy and he says sure no problem. That was my first real lesson in life. Ask and you may get. Don't ask you don't get. It's all there waiting for you. Pretty simple stuff. He gives me this huge canvas bag which holds the papers. I learned how to attach it to my handlebars and ride and deliver that way...
THE THREE STOOGES and SUPPER WAITING
Here, I am learning how to use coordination, balance and develop upper body strength too. Its my first gym work-out. It is simple enough. They give you a bunch of addresses and you deliver. It takes you as long as it takes YOU..to do. Me, I knocked it out. Here I learned how to not put off anything that can done now for later and to keep in top shape. Got the Three Stooges and supper waiting after this..life is sweet
OH YES...THE PAY...WHAT ABOUT THE PAY?
Then, one day and after one whole week, I asked how to get paid? I was having so much fun, it never occurred to me to ask. Simple, every two weeks, you get a list of who owes what and you go collect. Now, I was learning to move with a purpose. You want to get paid, you gotta go get it. Plus, time flys when you are having fun lesson was in play
WHAT..MORE MONEY..FOR WHAT?
A very pleasant surprise nearly floored me. It caught me off-guard and it was a doozy. In addition to paying their bill, people were TIPPING me...Here, I learned about self-esteem and the value I brought to others and how they appreciated me. Plus, I learned about opportunities and how once you get out there, good things happen..faith?
EAT, DRINK AND READ COMIC BOOKS?
Comic books, drinks, snacks and anything my little heart had to have was within my whimsical reach. After spending for spending sake and having my fill of within reach stuff, I realized that perhaps saving money for bigger items should be looked into. Things to deck out my bike or that were cool looking and worth owning. Here I learned why and how to save
YOU DON'T NEED TO BE TAUGHT EVERY LITTLE THING..JUST TO LIVE LIFE
All these lessons came with the job. No one had to tell me anything. I learned about self-evidence. Such is real life. Now, fast forward into the world of adult responsibility. I still see the same concepts, but now understand how to put them to the highest and best use...

Hello Richie,
Yes, proof positive that life lessons are not just taught...they are learned, by doing. Great post!

Richie, what a great post about the art of learning finance - first hand. I really like all of the lessons you "quickly" gleaned from "moving with a purpose.' How wonderful that you turned bike riding into a job - goes to show, "if you do what you love...the rest will follow." :)
