Furnace install, what were they thinking?
During a recent home inspection, I ran across this furnace that was installed in the attic.
The home was built in 2008 and was really built well.
Too bad the plumber and the mechanical contractors were not thinking along those lines.

Here is the furnace hooked up to a ceiling light. No box, no separate breaker for the furnace and not even a wire nut for a little bit of security for the connection. They simply tapped into the power supply for the overhead light.
Then I checked out the plenum to the furnace. It was not insulated at all.
Why use insulated duct work if you choose not to insulate the start of the trunk system? Makes no sense again.
This home has and will have issues. I listed the issues on the report, but what the buyer wants to do about them is up to him.
All I can do is advise on what I find. List it in the report and hope the buyer makes an informed decision.
Have a great day everyone.

Hi Tammie,
Even new homes need to be inspected for safety. It's not wise to buy a home no matter the age, without a home inspection.
Thank you for the comment.

Clint -- That is just unbelievable...but I am sure you see your share of DIY nightmares like this.
Hi Chris,
Yes, I like the saying that we think alike.
"a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" theory...
We would get along just fine.
Have a good day in Simcoe.

Hi Steven,
I guess the answer is YES, I did turn off the breaker to the light (it was 15 amps) and the furnace went off the blower anyway.
So yes it's connected to a 15 amp breaker.
Have a great night and thank you for the comment.

Hello my man Al,
School, it is to laugh. I don't think they went in the first place.
I really don't think they would want to go back when they have not been there in the first place.
Have a good night in Ormond by the Sea.

Hi William,
I don't know why the entire system was never inspected at the get go.
Some inspectors seem to not want to go into attic's to look at anything.
Have a good evening in San Diego.

Hey Adrian,
I bet they get it fixed before they close the home. The buyers were none too happy.
Have a good night in the great state of Washington.

Hello Ginny,
It will not kill the deal. The buyers want the work redone and inspected by the electrical inspector with the state.
All I can think of is "here we go again". LOL
Have a good evening in Rhode Island.

Good morning Clint congratulations to the feature. I wonder when a new one is installed does a inspector check it out?

Hello James,
Too many new furnaces are never inspected due to the installer never getting the proper permits for the new install.
They want to save a few bucks and it could end up costing some lives.
The state needs to crack down on these installers who don't follow the rules for furnace and water heater installs.
Have a good day in Rogers, Arkansas my friend.

Hi Clint.
Looking at the electrical tape make me think that maybe the home owner did it himself...
