Moving Can Be An Emotional Roller Coaster!

Marti Steele wrote a post The Hugs and Tears Involved in Passing the Deed with the buyers graciously listening to the stories about living in the house.

We experience so many emotions and reactions with our clients in Real Estate. The most recent was a young family who found their dream home at an unbelievable price and the seller, a short sale, sitting with dark glasses and red eyes at the table. This sale represented a huge loss. The buyers were very quiet and respected the seller's situation.

It is an emotional roller coaster and we need to be aware and treat each situation with sensitivity.

In my careers of nursing, art and real estate, I have found that not putting closure to a stressful life situation can lead to depression. It usually manifests 18 months to 2 years later.

Moving may not be as traumatic an experience as a divorce, medical disability, retirement, assisted living or job loss. Moving is another major life change.

Saying Goodbye To Your Home  and putting closure is important in real estate.    Don't forget to   help your children say good bye  to their home, their yard and their friends.

In counseling sessions with my clients, I share how to say "good bye" to the home they are leaving. Sometimes it is a home of many decades... many memories...good and not so good. These feelings need to be acknowledged as they go through the house finally one room at a time. Saying "good bye" is putting closure to this experience.  Hopefully some future depressive situations may be lessened.

Most clients appreciate this advice and some are very surprised at their emotional reactions. Moving can be an emotional roller coaster. I have seen grown men cry when going through this exercise.

My question: How do you help your clients through this emotional roller coaster?

Margaret, for years I worked in long term care. I assisted families in helping their parents, relatives make ANOTHER BIG life change and what I learned is that no matter whether it is a good change or a bad change, it STILL takes at least 30 days to process it emotionally. I had to remind my children of aging parents that they would be seeing this in their family members, even though it was a healthier option for them. (At that time I worked in assisted living).

Change is CHANGE. Give it time. Own your emotions. You did that really well with this post.

Hi Margaret, a wonderful post that everyone should read. We can't just be consumed with the details of getting the job done but to remain involved through separation with understanding and sensitivity. Well done in true classic Margaret style.

Margaret it is such an emotional roller coaster for almost everyone that is moving.  It's their hopes and dreams they're packing up and  a lot of memories. It's a BIG deal and knowing and understanding how to assist and guide them is such a gift.

Buying and selling is, indeed, an emotional roller coaster. Even when decisions are made to move along, the emotions surrounding that process can be intense. Being sensitive to what our clients are experiencing is an important part of our role, and putting ourselves in their shoes can make a huge difference in understanding what they are experiencing.

Hi Margaret,

Moving is a HUGE rollercoaster for anyone - whether planned or not.  I remember moving my mom from her home to my house in the year before she made her transition from this earthly realm.  It was devastating to her and tough on me and the other children.  It was the right thing to do, but it was ...

Thanks for the post and best of success to you this year!

Procedures vary from state to state...our short sale sellers pre sign all the closing documents and it is their own goodbye to the home they can no longer keep. The buyers, a few days later have their closing and sellabrate their own kind of new start.

Margaret...Our buyers and sellers usually sit face to face at the closing table, but I really try to keep everyone upbeat by reiterating the message that this is the best scenario for everyone involved.

Margaret - Thanks for your kind comments about my post.  I love your idea of having sellers walk through their home and remember the good memories.  I think it's especially hard in a short sale.....knowing it's what they need to do, but not really wanting to let go.
