'Big Brother' Is Big In California

Fairbanks Alaska Real Estate Big brother is about to become a little more embedded in the lives of Californians. According to an article in the International Herald Tribune, the State of California is set to enact regulations which would allow utility companies to 'remotely' adjust your electricity usage.

Adjustments in your preset temperature, for example, could be achieved by existing remote control thermostat technology. While customers could override the utility company’s adjustments, the utility companies would have final authority to adjust electricity consumption during emergencies via programmable communicating thermostats.

Now, I'm not going to get into a political rant on the failings of the California Legislature with respect to deregulation, but this just smacks of yet another knee jerk reaction. Yet another in a long line of inept decisions since deregulation of California’s energy market in the mid 90's.

According to the Integrated Energy Policy Report, California energy consumption has remained relatively flat over the past 30 years, whereas consumption in the US has increased almost 50%. Energy efficiency has its place, I'll admit, but there are limits to what efficiency can accomplish. At some point generating capacity would need to rise to meet demand.

Given that the population of California has doubled since 1965 and is expected to grow to more than 44 million people by 2020 and 60 million by 2050 it would seem, at least to me, that increasing overall capacity would be a better, more viable solution to the problem.

I would love to hear opinions from some of our California friends... and everyone else, of course.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

Utilities are already regulated during emergency and peak usage times in California, albeit voluntarily. You get a break on your utility bill if you agree to let SMUD, for example, turn off your A/C for 15 minutes during peak cooling times. We are primed for a brown-out in California because we have too many damn people living here and not enough power to service those people. Over 35 million people live in this state. We are running out of not only electricity but also water. There are simply not enough resources to go around and nobody wants to pay anymore taxes for increased services.

It's almost like living in Mexico. Here's my solution: send home everybody who were born in a state starting with the letter N and working toward Z. Let everybody stay who were born in states starting with the letter A and ending in M. That's it. Just take divide the alphabet in half and send those people home.

Debe Maxwell: I feel the same way, Debe.  To me this just seems like a backwards step.  At some point, and some argue California is already there, more power will be needed.  'Conservation' can't power the additional tens of millions of new residents that are heading west.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Elizabeth Weintraub, Sacramento Real Estate Broker: Hi, Elizabeth.  I'm guessing the Alphabet Residency Plan probably won't get a lot of traction in the state house.  It starts with electricity power-downs, but where does it end?  programmable communicating water pumps that shut water down (or off) at peak hours.  Sounds like an impending crisis to me.

JESSE & KATHY - We have a program like that here, but it is voluntary, and it gives you a discount on your service (albeit a slight one).  I can't imagine having it forced upon me.  If the statistics that you mentioned are correct, it seems absurd to me that they haven't increased their capacity at all.  If it's about energy conservation, then they should be the ones leading the charge for renewable energy (like wind turbines).  Big Brother the TV show is fine.  This kind of Big Brother is disgusting.
