Gardening tip

crabgrassWith the transformation I have been doing at the house in the yard one of the things that is hard to control even with black plastic and mulch is weeds and especially CRABGRASS. I hate that stuff. I think they may call it crabgrass because it makes US crabby to have to pull it up.

It is REAL TOUGH stuff with UNBELIEVABLE strong roots and is so NOT my idea of fun. Doing it once is enough but having to do it over and over again is a ROYAL PAIN

I just found out about this tip and if it really works it will be great blessing and a lot less expensive way to keep the weeds under control and save me countless hours of hardwork.

I have a gardeners soul but not the back to go with it. I had to make another trip to the doctor Monday because I inflamed my ribs BIG TIME because I overdid AGAIN with lifting and wheeling 7 wheelbarrows for my raised beds.

Maybe I am too stubborn and independent to think I can't do some things without paying a price.

There is a saying that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. It is much harder to do it the other way and that is what I did. JUMPED IN FULL FORCE and am dealing with the fallout later.  Here is the tip:

TIP: Baking soda neutralizes the ph in the soil and nothing will grow there. use baking soda around all of the edges of flower beds to keep the grass and weeds from growing into beds. Just sprinkle it onto the soil so that it covers it lightly. Do this twice a year - spring and fall.

Well I for one will be trying this Sharon. Baking soda and vinegar are two things I use a lot of in and around my home. I hadn't heard/read that baking soda is good for fending off weeds, but will certainly give it a try.

I too have a gardeners soul and not the back to go with it. I feel your pain. Take care, over doing it is easy, the recuperation on the other hand takes a LONG time.

Denise-So will I and the heat is keeping me inside more or in the pool so I have to. The recuperation is definitely LONGER. I have a lot of chronic places that hurt and the ribs just popped up last week. It is better with predison but not sure how I will do when I am out of them.

I don't think that's gonna work.  I know you can put in hydrangeas to make the be a different color.  I think you better stick to round up for the crab grass.

Roger-I know but I can let all my hard work dry up.  They are some better as long as I take the predisone. Hope they still did afterwards.  Thank you my friend.

Kristin-Happy 4th to you and hope it works.

Hi Tammy-The crabgrass is growing where my flowers are so I can't. I found a tip about hydrangeas I will share soon.

Sharon, yet ANOTHER great use for baking soda!  You can take a teaspoon of it in water, drink it down and it gives you energy--did you know THAT?  So, when you're feelin' dog tired after a tough day of haulin' wheelbarrows of STUFF, then drink it down. I swear it helps. Cheap, easy, no caffeine rush, but most don't need that in the middle of the afternoon anyway...this is better for you!

Gayle-Thank you I had never heard of that. Too bad I couldn't drink it to make all the pains go away and stay away. Well I can dream.

We have a bad problem with crabgrass! It seems like it'll die off and then comes back a few weeks later. I've noticed when it comes back, it comes in force!
