Why Having a Smart Phone is so Smart!

The other day my 9 year old son was nosing around my office and found a small device inside a small cloth bag and asked me what is was. Well I explained to him I used to have a PDA (of course I had to explain what a PDA is) and that if I put this on the front of the PDA I could take pictures with it.

Of course my son thought it was funny that I could not do this on my phone. I remember when I bought my PDA (For several hundred dollars!) that I commented this should all be merged into a phone.

Well today I have a smart phone – which my 15 year old son remarked on Facebook is wasted on me because I am old and primarily use it to play cards on. Now I am an old dog and new tricks do not come easy but think about all the things my smart phone has replaced:

  1. My Office Phone – I only use one phone – My cell Phone.

  2. A secretary to answer the office phone when I am out.

  3. The Pager – I used to carry a Pager; even for a while when I first had a cell phone as the cell phone was so expensive I had my secretary page me for important calls and then I would call them back.

  4. My old large bulky and expensive cell phone.

  5. My PDA, which replaced my day planner.

  6. Documents and forms.

  7. Reading material.

  8. Maps. I used to have a car full of maps of different areas.

  9. My Camera.

  10. My video camera

  11. A Level.

  12. A Compass.

  13. Hand held/carried coupons.

  14. A deck of cards for when I am bored.

  15. CD's and Tapes for the car, being tied to the radio stations I can get in the car.

  16. Having to Check e-mail on the computer.

  17. Text have replaced many phone calls.

  18. Pictures in my wallet are now pictures on my Smart Phone

  19. Address book.

  20. Tape Recorder and tapes.

  21. Alarm – Reminder

Now I am sure there are more things the phone has replaced for some people. I can get my Supra Box key on the phone if I want and I know some people do not carry money – just cash on the smart phone app; but I am not there yet.

These are 21 real things I have carried with me in this job and my prior job that I know longer need on a day to day basis as long as I have my smart phone with me. What are some things you can do with out now?

Oh ya – I can follow my teenagers smarmy comments about me on Facebook on my phone!

Jean, Brenda,

Thanks for coming by.  I suspect more and more will be done with smart phones.  I think the PC will disappear and I our phone will be the PC and it will wirelessly tie into bigger monitors when we need them.

My smartphone is like the Swiss Army Knife of tools - it does everything and it's always there.  As long as my phone has the features and software I need, I'm good to go.

Gene, I just switched from Android to iPhone. Contrary to popular belief, the iPhone is in the same price range as the higher end Androids, such as the Samsung Galaxy SIII. I switched because I have a MacBook Pro and I use the Apple Cloud to sync data.
