The Dangerous Truth About Sun Protection - Which Sunscreens Are Safe?

Time for my yearly lecture on sun protection.  Not all sunscreens are created equal....some actually do more harm than good.

Are you wasting money on a product that not only isn't protecting you, but could be increasing your risk of cancer?

at the beachMost people choose suncreen based on the SPF number...which refers to how much longer you can be in the sun before you burn.

SPF ratings refer only to protection from UVB radiation (sun burning rays).

SPF ratings don't refer to UVA radiation (the dangerous killer rays).

In order to be protected from UVA radiation, which is the primary cause of skin cancer, your sunscreen must be "broad spectrum" and contain one of the following ingredients:

  •  titanium dioxide
  •  zinc oxide
  •  avobenzone (also called butyl methoxydibenzyl methane)
  •  Mexoryl SX
  •  Tinosorb (not available in U.S. products)

If one of these ingredients is not listed as a PRIMARY or ACTIVE ingredient, the sunscreen does not protect you.

While you are checking the list of ingredients, here's two ingredients you don't want:

1.  Oxybenzone, a common active ingredient in US sunscreens,  is a hormone disrupter (it mimics estrogen).

2.  Vitamin A  (also listed as  retinal palmitate) is added to 41% of all sunscreens.  Vitamin A sounds like a good thing, right?  Wrong.

Data from an FDA study indicates that:

"Vitamin A, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions."

What are the BEST SUNSCREENS?

What are the WORST SUNSCREENS?

Find your sunscreen and see how it rates

My sunscreen of choice is Badger.  The ingredients are healthy and  I love the way it goes on and how it feels.  Here is a link to their "find a retailer near you"  if you are interested in trying it.

Helpful Tips:

  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure (especially the non-mineral ones), and reapply often
  • Apply sunscreen liberally - Not using enough drastically reduces the SPF
  • Some unprotected sun exposure (15-20 minutes a day) is beneficial - a great source of Vit D

Lenn:  I totally agree....clothing and shade are the best defense.  We use too many products on our bodies that are full of chemicals and avoiding them is something we should do whenever possible.

Josh:  Thank you for reblogging....glad you found the post share worthy!

Tatyana:  I'm glad you found it helpful!

Sheila:  Not at all the scientific type, but I am health conscious.  The majority of sun products on the market shouldn't be on the shelves!  What angers me the most are the products marketed for babies and children that are not protecting and have harmful chemicals in them.  Mothers need to know exactly which products are safe for their children.  We shouldn't have to do research before buying, we should be able to trust the products sold.

Dorie:  You are welcome, but as I already said....we shouldn't have to research our products, they should be safe.

Joanna:  Thank you!  It's surprising to me just how many people don't seem to take sun protection seriously.

Sharon- I never leave the house without some kind of protection.  And when we do go to the beach you will find me under the umbrella!

Sharon, this is a lecture we all need every year! My husband damaged his skin on business trips to Mexico and the Caribbean. Now he wears hats and long sleeves no matter how hot it is outside.

Kathy:  I have no choice but to sit under an umbrella....I've developed quite an intolerance for the sun the past few years.  I used to sit in direct sun for the entire day when I was younger.  If only I knew then what I know now....

Al & Peggy:  People need to be more aware of the dangers that products we use present to our health.  It's sad that we can't trust the manufacturers, but we can't.

Janice:  It's not until we know someone who ends up with skin cancer that most of us wake up...as a society we are much more about dealing with health after the fact, rather than prevention.

Sharon:  Good post and I hope you repost this every year.  One summer my mother got the worst sun burn I have ever seen.  She was on some type of medication (I cannot remember what).  I advise people taking medication to read about it BEFORE they spend time in the sun.  I am sure even sun screen would not have prevented that burn.

George:  My husband is Italian and feels the same way you do...I'm not sure either of you are immune to the dangers....be careful!

Valerie:  I've been on meds that warned about sun exposure....it's very important to read the label when given a new med.  The worst burn I've ever gotten was when I had sun poisoning on a trip to Jamaica years ago when I was young and sun foolish!

Sharon, this is a good post.  I have learned over the years to simply avoid the sun and when I can't I make sure I use a sunscreen with Titanium Dioxide and or zinc oxide.  Fortunately most of the ones in health food type stores meet the requirements that you post about.

Charles:  I've developed an intolerance for the sun and have to avoid it too.  Sunscreen is my protection when I know I'll be unable to avoid the sun and have no other choice.  Health food stores are a great place to shop for sunscreen.
