artichoke flowers

The Farmers' Market never ceases to amaze us in the variety of things displayed on the farmers' tables in Santa Barbara.  Can you guess what plant this?  That long bit of leaf  is your clue...It is an artichoke that was not cut for eating, it was left on the plant to continue its cycle and bloom.  By the way, artichokes are still in season here!

Wishing you a wonderful Sunday, Cheers Ron & Alexandra

Artichokes are certainly a curious plant.  The flowers would never indicate that an artichoke was even part of that plant.

Ditto Kathy -- your Farmer's Market photos are always wonderful.  I've never seen an artichoke in flower before.  They're spectacular!

R & A, often I wonder if that's how you got to be a tribal leader, by finding food.  It's rare that I would be hiking along and say "I wonder what that tastes like" then take that first bite.

I don't think I have ever seen an artichoke in flower before, Alexandra. How pretty they are, thank you for adding to my knowledge base. And, my eye candy.

Jane,

I used to have artichoke plants in our LA garden, and every so often one of the chokes I missed would evolve into a beautiful flower...So, I always left one of two on the plant, I felt it deserved to show off its beauty.

Kathy,

Ever since the concept started back when we lived in LA, I went to the Farmers Market regularly.  This continued in our 6 year stint in Napa.  We have lived here for 6 years and are there every Saturday when in town, and occasionally at the Tuesday market which is different.  So I have no plans to stop this.

Dianne,

Well now you have, and I am glad I was the one to show it to you.

Kevin,

And we need to thank all those valiant souls, a tomato was considered poinsonous, avocados, etc...we owe a huge debt of gratitude to those brave ones.

Toni,

Love doing that and I so appreciate you doing the same...It is also eye candy for me.  A

Alexandra, Artichoke blooms are gorgeous and decorative and remind me od a crazy hairdo on a muppet character! We have a few left on our plants and they most likely will bloom out too! We were able to harvest more than 40 from our 2 plants this year. Yum!

Wanda,

They are a superb plant.  What an amazing harvest you had with 49 from 2 plants.  You must have excellent soil and you must have had great compost.  I am impressed, you are truly a master gardener. A

Hi Alexandra,

We grow artichokes in our garden and have let them flower but I love the composition of these flowers heads.  It reminds me of those little rubber balls we use to have.  I can't seem to remember what they were called though!

Thanks for sharing and have a happy 4th!
