FOREVER MARILYN

FOREVER MARILYN, the 26 foot sculpture weighs 34,000-pounds and cost about $40,000 to transport and $60,000 to clean up and re-install in Palm Springs, CA. It took a week to be trucked across the country. Tourists and drivers alike can now see the enormous statue at Palm Canyon and Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA. All funds to remove “Forever Marilyn” was received from private donations.

Marilyn Monroe Statue by Kristin Hamilton

The statue portrays the infamous scene from the 1955 film "The Seven Year Itch". If you recall this movie, the scene was where a drafty New York subway grate blows up Marilyn’s skirt well above her knees which was pretty racy for the time. This portrayal of Marilyn is still one of the most popular.

The sculpture had been in Chicago but due to some controversy, it was dismantled and moved to Palm Springs, where it will remain until June 2013. Everyone seems to feel it is more appropriate for her to be here as Californians tends to be more open-minded. Plus it will big draw since most tourists seem to be star-struck due to the Hollywood scene. Also the timing is right since next year is the 50th anniversary of the star’s untimely death.

This statue was cast by Seward Johnson, heir to Johnson & Johnson. He is known for casting well known stars.

There is just one question here...what is under the skirt. I guess you will have to there to see for yourself!

I didn't even know there was such a statue, it actually looks like something you'd see in Las Vegas

Have A Great Day

Yes, the Marilyn Monroe statue was in Chicago on Michigan Avenue -- and had it's share of controversy and vandalism.  Glad it has found a new, good home!

Hi Doris,

It is huge and looked nice in the square in Chicago but due to conterversy it was moved and I hope it will remain here as she looks at home.

Thanks for stopping and have a great Sunday.

Hi Hannah,

I love her too! She had such a tragic life but was such a talente actress and so hypnotic to all of us.

The movie "Some Like it Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon" was always one of my favorites.

It is our gain and Chicago's loss.

Kristin-I never knew about the statue. I think it fits to have it in CA after all she was a actress and you equate that with California. Great pic. That is a HUGE statue and what an expense to have it shipped and cleaned.

That is such a great shot. Hard to imagine that was once racy. Too bad there was such controversy over her. What a question, "What is under that skirt?" I got a laugh on that one. Have a great week Kristin.

The "Rat Pack" spent a lot of time in Palm Springs, somehow, I think Marilyn is content with this move. . .She should be at home there!

Hi Sharon,

I agree with you totally. Marilyn belongs in California and Palm Springs is such a nice city so it would likely not get vandalized there. I hope they get to keep it.

Hi Cal,

The newscaster for ABC news actually wrote it in his article and I just repeated it as it was funny. Thanks for stopping.

Hi Myrl,

I know she was probably friends with most of the rat pack as well as others who ended up in Palm Springs. I just love to go there and drive around. We go about twice a month. I will be stopping by to see her at each visit.

So why is the statue only there for a year, and where does she go to after Calafornia?

Hi Joni,

I do not know but am trying to find out. She was vandalized in Chicago and someone drew tattoos on her so I doubt if she is going back there. She is really large so it will take a big place for her......but I am hoping she might stay in Palm Springs as they love her there.

Hi Karen,

This is such a gigantic statue and what a great image of her. I am hoping it will get to stay in Palm Springs as we all love her here. I thought everyone loved her but apparently Chicago didn't as she was damaged and there was a big stink about her dress and legs showing. I guess we are more tolerant of movie stars here in California. I loved that movie "Some like it Hot"
