Am I the Only One Who Thinks This is Nuts?? (reblog)

For every foolish person who continues to pay for bottled water . . .    please read this wonderful article Malcolm has written.

Bottled water is not a status symbol!  It is a gimmick that far too many people have fallen for.  Especially in our part of the world !

I will admit to having been to Fiji and to having had bottled water whilst there.  HOWEVER, it was Perrier water and back before their fiasco in the '90s and before I grew up and came to my senses!!!

If you feel you are need of having water with you at all times, please check out the many many non-disposable water bottles available that allow you to use your tap water.  Brita is just one example:

Is it just me, or does this seem silly to anyone else?

I was shopping for groceries last night when I noticed a product that was stocked in the aisle where I buy my drinks. The name leapt off the shelf and lodged into my brain immediately.

Fiji water. Surely it's just the name of the product and not actually water from Fiji, that would be ludicrous wouldn't it?

I picked up the bottle, turned it around, and sure enough this product is actually from the Fiji Islands. It says right on the bottle that this water comes from an artesian acquifer in the Yaqara Valley of Viti Levu.

It seems like it's a pretty popular product, there was evidence on the shelf that many cases and individual bottles had been purchased.

I live in Ontario, and here are some pretty neat facts about Ontario;

Population:
With a population of more than 12 million, Ontario is home to one in three Canadians.

Size:
Ontario is Canada’s second-largest province, covering more than one million square kilometres (415,000 square miles).

Land:
894,639 square kilometres (344,092 square miles).

Water:
177,398 square kilometres (68,490 square miles), including 250,000 lakes and about one-third of the world's fresh water.

Thats right, 12 million people in Ontario share a full one-third of the entire world's fresh water supply.

One would think that there should be absolutely no demand for water from Fiji in Ontario. It boggles the mind.

Beyond the fact that it's not very environmentally friendly to bottle water and ship it half way around the world, I am worried about the ethical implications and the effect that this might have on the people of Fiji. I discovered a few facts about Fiji (a place I really have never given too much thought to before), and something really stood out for me;

Fiji ranks 92 out of 177 countries on the United Nation’s human development index. With 49% of Fijians living in urban areas and only just over 50% of the rural population having access to water sources adequate for drinking.

Why are we buying this stuff? Half of the rural poulation of Fiji can't get enough clean drinking water, and we in Ontario are buying the water right out from under their feet when we have an over abundance of it here at home. God Almighty, the fact that this is on the shelves of our grocery stores really highlights how little respect we have for the environment as well as people who are less fortunate than ourselves.

This is one product I will never buy.

Troy -  if today's child wanted to drink from the hose they'd most likely have to wear a helmet before they were allowed :0)    Bottled water should be outlawed unless the community water has been contaminated or there is an emergency of some sort!

I tend to agree ! I only buy bottled water for the convenience when I am showing homes. The bottles are easy to carry. But any more I seem to be buying power drinks instead to beat the oppressive heat

And I believe tests on bottled water have shown that in many cases it is not as pure as the local tap water.  I have refillable water bottles and use a filter on my tap water.  The only time bottled water is around is in the summer time to have for my clients when we are on a long day of showings.  Figure they don't want to borrow one of my other water bottles.

Cindy -  I've sent samples from water coolers in offices/homes to the health authority for testing and they have failed on bacteria and ecoli  !!  I can only imagine in transport, that bottled waters have reached some pretty amazing temperatures which also affects the plastic they're in.  Not for me.  (and I advise my clients to bring the beverages they feel they'll require - I don't supply anything to anyone anymore.  Can't take the risk)

Susan, I keep meaning to buy the reusable container for my water. I do refill my bottles dozens of times before tossing them in the recycling. Most of it doesn't even taste good.

Connie -  you might want to reconsider reusing those bottles (even tho the intent was good!)

Even Plastic Water and Soda Bottles Should Not Be Reused
Health advocates also recommend not reusing bottles made from plastic #1 (polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET or PETE), including most disposable water, soda and juice bottles. According to The Green Guide, such bottles may be safe for one-time use, but re-use should be avoided because studies indicate they may leach DEHP—another probable human carcinogen—when they are in less-than-perfect condition.

Plastic bottles used for bottled water, especially the softer plastic bottles, are dangerous to our health and even more so if we wash them then reuse them! The plastic bottles contain toxic chemicals and in time the plastic begins to break down and releases these toxins and does so far quicker if the bottles are reused. If you can taste the plastic as you are drinking the water then you are drinking the plastic!

The bottles are even more dangerous if they are in a hot place... walking around with a bottle of water in your hand on a blazing hot day with the sun on it will make the toxins leach even more. If you are going to buy bottled water, then make sure it's in a "safe" plastic bottle.

To be certain you are using a safe plastic you can look for a symbol on the bottle, which is on ALL plastic bottles. The symbol is the recycling symbol. A number 2 HDPE means it is high density polyethylene, a number 4 LDPE - low density polyethylene and number 5 PP - polypropylene. If you have these numbers on your bottle, your bottle is safe. But, most plastic bottles in which water is usually sold are a number 1, and is only recommended for one time use.

Number 3 bottles contain polyvinyl chloride/PVC, which can leach hormone-disrupting chemicals into the liquids they are storing and will release synthetic carcinogens into the environment when incinerated. Number 6 bottles - polystyrene/PS, has been shown to leach styrene, a probable human carcinogen (a cancer causing substance), into food and drinks as well.

I'm sure you have noticed when picking up some bottles that they tend to 'flop' a bit in your hand as you grip them, these are the softest bottles and the most dangerous. If you are going to buy bottled water, always make sure it is a hard, rigid plastic.

Susan-I think most people drink it because it is convenient and they are too lazy to fill bottles with tap water using the Britta water pitcher. I think it is OUTRAGEOUS that people pay $1 and up for 16-20 of water and yet bitch about the price of gas. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Susan, I have no problems with the water from the tap. I drink tons of water daily and the cost of bottled is ridiculous.

I agree that it's just plain crazy. Tests have shown that the water is not more pure, and in fact may be contaiminted with chemicals and other things you really don't want to drink.

On top of that, the plastic does leach toxins into your body - especially if the bottle has gotten hot from sitting in the car. And how does anyone know how that water was transported - it may have been super-heated in transit several times before you put it in your refrigerator.

I do like to carry water with me when I'm out and about, but we have good spring water, so I fill my glass or stainless steel water bottle at home. The only time I buy bottled water is if I'm away all day and run out. I'd rather pay too much for a bottle of water than buy a soft drink.

I keep bottled water in my car trunk...but I have this really cool Filtrete bottle system on my counter top.  It is ODD that it's almost like we think we HAVE to drink bottled water now as a nation...

Interesting re-blog! We do buy bottled water from Costco. We mostly drink our water from our fridge, but find having the bottles are always handy when we have workers at the house and want to offer them something to cool off. We do try and be mindful of the environment and participate in recycling even though it is not mandatory here in our area. For ourselves, we have re-usable travel mugs to use.
