Free Fishing on the Fourth in North Carolina

On July 4th, 2012, in the Great State of North Carolina, you can get bitten with the Fishing Bug for free!  Residents and non-residents of North Carolina are invited to give fishing a try for 24 hours.... No license required!

Once you get "hooked", you will then need to purchase your recreational fishing license through the NC Division of Marine Fisheries ($15 per year).   If you live in Carteret County, North Carolina, there are several locations to purchase your license, or you can apply online too!  Fishing can be very relaxing and a lot of fun, but make sure you know the size and bag limits for North Carolina before taking your catch home for dinner.

Do you want to use your free day for "surf fishing", or maybe you have a boat or a dock to fish from?  Of course, you will need a fishing rod and a little bit of tackle, but the nice guys over at Southland Outfitters in Atlantic Station can hook you up with everything you need and they are always willing to take the time to show you the ropes lines too.

Then the tough part..... Where to fish on the Crystal Coast?  Tough, not because there is no where to fish, but because there are so many choices of wonderful "spots"!

Now..... Have fun, good luck and maybe I'll see you on the docks.... with a Fish On!

Amy, I think the best odds of catching a fish are at the the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.  For some reason they look at me strange when I come in with a pole.......  :)   Bill

Good Morning Josh!  Thanks for the kind words and have a wonderful day ;-)

Dorie - Not hard to be a spokesperson when you love the area so much.... I know you understand!  Happy 4th to you & yours!

Cindy - I'm not much of a fisherman, but I believe you need a special permit to catch those crabs (the creepy crawly ones).

Myrl - Good point..... If we run out of shrimp & squid, I'll use that bug!

Ellen - Thanks, and you too have a wonderful 4th!

Roger - Good Morning and a Happy 4th to you!  Tanner and I are actually hitting the fish today, but may head back out tomorrow too.... depends on how today goes (we are both "not so good" at fishing).

Michael - Isn't it tho'?  We will probably hit the docks right after the PKS Parade!  Happy 4th of July!

Bill - You're right.... and I don't know why they look at you funny ;-)  The aquarium does hold fishing classes (outside), and I think me & Tan Man may just sign up for one.  Unless we master the sport this week!

Christiansens - Hehehehe... We actually got "hooked" last week at a CubScout event..... Good thing to be "hooked' on here on the Crystal Coast!  Happy Fourth!

That is a pretty good idea and a good way to get more fishermen on the annual licenses.

Amy- great local post.  Teaching our young to fish teaches more than how to catch a fish... it teaches patience as well.

Amy,
Fishing on the 4th sounds good to me!  Little different geography in North Carolina compared to Washington State but both have fishing a’plenty!
Happy 4th to one and all.  Thanks for the blog!

Hi Amy,

that is so tempting to come over for the Fourth of july.

But the "honey do list is just too long" LOL

I will make it there for a small vacation I hope later this year.

Have a great day and thanks for spreading the word.

Best, Clint McKie

Chris & Dick - I lived in Naples, FL for ten years..... until 2005 when I moved back home!  Loved fishing there too :-)

Richie - You are welcome and Happy 4th!

Than - Pretty slick, but pretty cool too!  I am guessing many folks will get hooked in one day..... We were hooked thanks to a cub scout outing last week!

John - I think it's pretty cool!  I'll have to find out if NC offers this any other time..... We are really learning to love fishing!  Wishing you & yours a happy & safe 4th of July!

Kathy - I took Tanner fishing this morning.  He caught nine fish..... all I caught was seaweed :-(  But you should've seen the one that got away!

Phil - I love living in a coastal area.... of course, the mountain lakes & streams in NC are pretty fabulous too!  Happy 4th!

Clint - There you go teasing me again ;-)  Come on over anytime..... Always welcome on the Crystal Coast!

Now that's a bargain.  Not only can you get free fishing for a day in North Carolina, but you can get a great day of relaxation at the same time.  What a great idea.  I'm almost ready to drive over there for the day.
