Traveler's Rest - Greenville County's Northern Star

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Greenville Upstate

Traverler’s Rest was a home to a lot of Native American tribes which included Catawba, the Creek and the Cherokee. It‘s origin came from the people who would stopover to get some rest. It’s history dates back to America’s early years.

In the early 1800’s travelers needed places to rest between journeys. One of these spots was in the north of now what is called Traveler’s Rest where Mr. and Mrs. William Bishop operated a small inn where drovers could sleep while their animals were stored in a pen nearby. Most settlers in the area lived in Conestoga wagons, large covered wagons usually pulled by six horses.  They passed by in big numbers and drovers rode on horses from Kentucky and Tennessee to market their products in South Carolina. Stopovers from their trips gave birth to the name of the city now called Traveler’s Rest.
