CARLSBAD — The annual Carlsbad Triathlon is set for Sunday.

The 31st annual race starts at 8 a.m. at Tamarack State Beach. It consists of a 1K open-water swim, a 25K bicycle course and finishes with a 5K run.

The course is beginner-friendly consisting of mostly flat ground along the coast with a few rolling hills.

There will be 35 lifeguards on hand as well as “swimming buddies” from the TriClub of San Diego to encourage participants during the open-water swim.

The last day to register online is at 11:59 p.m. Thursday. The race is limited to 1,000 participants.

A clinic will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m Saturday at lifeguard tower 36 on Tamarack beach to teach participants about the skills used during the swimming, biking and running portions, as well as during transitions. Also covered will be how to dress and what to pack for the race.

Beginner triathlon talks also will be given from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the southwest parking lot of Westfield Plaza Camino Real near Sears.All pre-race clinics are free and open to the public. Cost to register for the triathlon is based upon city of residency. No registration will be allowed the day of the race.
