The Glen - Glenview
UPDATED 2022
The Glen in Glenview is a vast 1,121-acre site formerly the home of the Glenview Naval Air Station. When the Navy had no more use for the site, it was incorporated into Glenview. The Glen includes a myriad of different living styles: single-family homes, townhouses, condos, and senior living complexes.
Located in the middle is a grand shopping area that includes retail stores (both large and small), restaurants, services, and a movie theater. Plus the glorious Kohl Children's Museum, formerly located in Wilmette, is now in the Glen.
From 1995-to 1998, the City of Glenview prepared a master plan and began redeveloping the area by preparing it for sale by first building main roadways and utilities. Then different builders built sections of the Glen separately- some big names were Toll Brothers, Pulte Builders, and Kimball Hill Homes. It was amazing to see the Naval Air Station be transformed from concrete, runways, and 108 naval buildings into this beautiful and thoughtfully designed mixed-use community.
But there is more at the Glen than just stores and homes:
- The Glen Club - is an 18-hole Tom Fazio-designed golf course that has consistently been rated as a top course to play.
- A 32-acre remnant of a natural tallgrass prairie that was included in the design of the Glen - plus an interpretive center to help you spot wildlife and answer questions
- The Kohl Museum - a gem of a children's museum for those from birth to age 8
- The Glen has its own station for the Metra commuter line - the Milwaukee District North Line
- Attea Middle School for grades 6-8 is located here
- Dining choices galore include the Yardhouse, Bravo Cucina Italiana, Jameson's Char House, El Jardin, Eggsperience, Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar, Ted's Montana Grill, and many more. Plus the always popular Starbucks.
- Two senior assisted living centers: Chestnut Square and Vi at the Glen.
- Lastly, the one bit of nostalgia left over from the Naval Air Base: the original control tower still stands along Tower Road with new retail stores on its first floor.
Building is still going on at the Glen, although the site is fairly developed at this point.
