Historic John Poole House, Poolesville, Maryland

Residents of Poolesville, in Montgomery County, Maryland love the small town atmosphere of the community which is unique in the busy urban suburbs of Washington, DC.  Visitors to Poolesville also discover some interesting American history.

The John Poole House and General Store is the oldest structure in the community and original one room log cabin dates back to 1793.  It served as a home, general store and trading post.  The structure was enlarged several times and also served as the first post office, from 1810, in the community.

The John Poole house is located at 19923 Fisher Avenue, Poolesville, MD 20837 and now serves as an interpretive museum and gift show.  The room behind the merchandise store houses a display of Civil War Artifacts.

Dolores and I visited Poolesville during the 15th Annual Montgomery County Heritage Days weekend, presented by Heritage Montgomery.  The annual Heritage Days weekend is designed to develop tourism while protecting and promoting the cultural, historical and natural resources of Montgomery County.

Gosh, the place continues to look warm and inviting even today!  I hope Maryland soon experiences a respite from the heat, Roy!  I hope you and Dolores are ok, and will be able to enjoy the 4th.

Roy, We have a similar structure here that's the oldest working General Store in the Country and enjoy our visits there, just like anyone in the Maryland area will enjoy the John Poole House!

Wow! 1783!?!?!? Those are really neat pictures. The old tools are really cool and they used great ingenuity when design them. (Bet they would have loved one of our modern houses though.)

Really great photos Roy.  I've been living in Montgomery County all my life and have known of Poolesville - but never knew there was an actual Poole that it was named after.  I just remembered that years ago it was the favorite place for police officers to buy a house to live in.
