Storms Hit Central VA

Once again this year we are reminded to be prepared for an emergency in Bedford VA. Last week all of Central Virginia was hit with fast moving violent storms. Many trees have fallen, causing damage to homes and power outages. To make matters worse, we have had unseasonably warm temperatures and each day has brought another storm causing further damage to homes. Many cooling shelters are open and churches are giving away ice and water.  Check your local news channels for the locations.

Emergency preparedness in Bedford VA

We all have heard the motto of the scouts, Be Prepared! It’s hard to be prepared for every type of emergency that may come up, but having a few things around will really help you during times of need in Bedford VA. Candles are nice and romantic but in a storm with high winds they are a fire hazard. Its interesting is an emergency prepared list is very similar to a camping list.

1.       Flashlights and lots of batteries.

2.       Bottled water for drinking

3.       Canned food

4.       Nuts and fruit

5.       Sleeping bags

6.       Keep gas in your car-if power is out you can’t pump gas so you will be limited to the gas in your car and around your home if you have to go somewhere

7.       Gas for chain saw or power equipment such as a generator.

8.       Propane stove and propane gas- this could be a camp stove or a grill

9.       Prescriptions

10.   Cell phone and always keep the charger with you

11.   Clean cloths

12.   Tarp and tie downs

13. An emergency radio-they have betteries but you can also crank them for power.

14. Keep a couple of 2 liter bottles full of water to help you flush the toliet

This is good information and we should have it handy during the hurricane season. Thank you.

Your information is drilled into us every year as we live in a hurricane prone area but we do tend to forget about all of the other natural disasters that happen all over this country.

Great advice, Scott, and a bunch of us got a chance to use it this past week.  Much of our area still doesn't have electricity, cable or phone service.

Scott, very good advice! We were pretty lucky here in Northern Virginia. We lost telephone and television for a couple of days, but the power and Internet stayed on.

Excellent advice!  Better to have this stuff on hand and not need it than need it and not have it.

We are lucky also, i only lost power for a few minutes at our house and Bedford office. Another KW franchise (Hilltop) bought and sent generators to our Lynchburg location who has remained without power. We still have many, many people without power.

Scott,

Valuable advice. As it would happen, amateur radio operators nationwide participated in a preparedness drill called "field day". Suggest tou also find a local Ham so when the communications go down, you'll know how to get emergency communications through.

Hope your area has recovered enough to have a Happy July 4th.

Good reminders.  It seems like there is something to be concerned about in just about every part of the United States.  Happy July 4th.

Good information Scott.  Too many people take things for granted and are shocked and unprepared when an emergency happens.  It seems like National Emergencies are becoming more frequent so we all need to be well prepared.

Scott:

I am always harping on disaster preparedness.  Since I live in earthquake country I think people show be prepared.  The only time people here think about being prepared is after a mild quake.
