Driggs Mansion, The Most Recognized Landmark Along Colorado's Hwy 141. Not all that long ago, you use to be able to walk up and in Driggs Mansion, but vandals and weather have taken their toll on the old structure and now the area is fenced off.
Construction was started in 1914 and finished in 1918. Water had to be hauled in from West Creek to make the stone blocks. When it was finished Driggs Mansion had 6 or 7 rooms and two fireplaces. The roadside marker shows a picture of what the mansion use to look like before vandals hauled off much of the place.
Located along the Unaweep-Tabeguache Scenic and Historic Byway between Whitewater and Gateway, CO, the house sits at the base of another recognizable landmark...Thimble Rock. It's said the mansion's arched doorway was put there to represent Thimble Rock.
Driggs Mansion is located just past mile marker 126 as you are coming from the Whitewater side of the Scenic Byway.
The Scenic Byway is also known as CO Hwy 141, and this trip through canyon country is well worth the time. Remember to leave with a full tank of gas. Just before we got to Driggs Mansion coming from Whitewater, we passed a sign that said no gas for 96 miles.
Plan most of a day for this trip. Gateway Canyons Resort is a good place for a lunch stop, or bring your own. There are several picnic areas along CO Hwy 141.
