Call Me Old Fashioned - Memories of July 4 From By Gone Eras

As I started my day today I was given pause for thought that today didn't feel much like a holiday.  A lot of the festivities have been moved away from July 4 because it is in the middle of the week this year. 

I'm not American.  I was born and raised in Canada and moved here about 15 years ago, so my memories might be colored a little but I listen to stories from friends and family members who are born and raised American citizens. 

It seems to me that July 4 is about the independence of the United States from England in a time when England had political and economic control of the country.  The celebration was about families joining together to celebrate the traditions and the United States coming into its own as a political and economic world power.  It was a day when businesses and establishments would close and allow people to join and celebrate with their families. 

This morning I got up, checked my messages, received several emails from clients.  My oldest son, a Veteran, left for work (he'll be home about 5:30).  I had work to do this morning and I had to pick up rent, pick up HOA documents and take pictures for a BPO that had to be in for tomorrow at 9am.    It feels like just another day.

It occured to me that today is no longer about this countries independence, it's not about breaking away from the tyrrany of the English anymore, it is an excuse for a sale.  Families can not join together because many members are working and the whole premise of the vacation has been lost.   Are we celebrating our countries independence or have we become slaves to the economy? 

I saw a cartoon this morning that portrayed the Andy Griffith Show and said we needed more Mayberry and less Jersey Shore.  It's not so much that as it seems that we are moving away from old family values and towards who knows what?

Interesting, I felt pretty much the same way until I went over to Annapolis for the Parade and the Fireworks. It was a nice way to end the day.

We went over to Chesapeake Beach yesterday to be with friends and watch fireworks. There were a lot of business happening today but we still made time to drive around and see the fireworks. Enjoy the week of celebrations and freedom to choose how you want to spend this day.

We understand what you are saying. We were fortunate though, we had the entire day with family and friends - no business allowed. We have to learn that it is OK to spend time with family and friends not working and just enjoying the time we have together. Of course, let's not forget about the men and women who must work every holiday in order for us to have the freedom to choose between working, staying home, eating potato salad or watching fireworks. :)
