Let Freedom Ring . . . For Me!

On this fourth of July Independence Day celebration we hear speech after speech extoling the virtues and advantages that we here in the USA enjoy.

We certainly are better off than 95.6% (my unofficial poll) of the people in the rest of the world. We are taught that we got here by being fiercely independant and willing to make great sacrifices to gain and to maintain this freedom.

Now if you listen to the political campaigners we find that, once again, this freedom is under attack. On one side we hear that we must keep our freedom To create and keep wealth, and to not be forced to pay for health insurance (among other things) while on the other side we hear that we must keep our freedom From lack of proper medical care, education, employment, and housing (again, among other things.)

We hear both sides claiming the high ground of constitutional rights and mandates. The US Supreme court makes decisions on current issues, usually with a split decision, sometimes with four judges on one side of an issue and five judges on the other.

If you review the campaign speeches of the last 150 years or so you hear the same repetitive slogans and rhetoric. We are always "on the cusp of calamity" according to those trying to get elected. I have often thought that the media only rehashes the same old material every election year.

If you want to see real independence, you might want to visit Afganistan. No one has been able to bring those people into any semblance of unity or order for thousands of years.  Is this what we mean by independence?

What does independence mean to you? Should the accident of birth be the major determinate of future economic and social prospects? Are the children of less fortunate parents doomed to remain disadvantaged and free To miss out on the things that make "the pursuit of happiness" possible?

At what point does the concept of "equality" come into play?

As this political season plays itself out, I urge you to get past the rhetoric and mudslinging that surrounds us and take a hard look at what independence really means to you.

You will probably not learn much by listening to the political slogans.

They sertainly do their share of recycling the old rhetoric for sure Thomas. If I was the most powerful man in the world and could print more money as I go I believe I could get a lot more done than Obama. Two years unrestraint and even now he is making it up as he goes by passing congress and the supreme court and we still are worse off. If I was Obama I would be blaming everyone too but out of shame and embarrassment.

Charles: Thanks for you comments.  I am surprised that more folks have not chimed in as well, but so it goes here on AR.

It is tough for any President to get much done if the House and/or Senate refuses to allow critical bills to come out of committee and actually get voted on.

I am sure Obama is embarrassed -- I would be too -- but what can he do to get things moving?

Actually the economy is improving, much to the chagrin of those trying to get elected. Everyone points to the sluggish employment figures, but history shows that employment is among the last categories to improve. Once that number improves the economy is already well on the way to better times.

I love the term "wasteful spending". There are so many ways to use this to campaign on. Remember that every dollar that gets spent goes into someone's pocket and perhaps helps to create jobs.

But that is another subject . . .

Well said Tom.

It is hard to get excited when the news stays the same for 30 years and is as you say telling us that..." we are always on the edge of calamity.fairfax county real estate agents Jan and Steve Bachman

Hello Thomas -- this is the most important election in our history -   HMM, in a a battleground state such as yours, how many times did you hear that in the last year or so?

5,527times. (I counted 'em! -- but I may have missed a couple)  LOL

Add the 9436 times I heard it four years ago, and 5388 time four years before that, and  . . . . well, you get the point.

Now that the election is finally over, everyone is now pledging to get along and get things done -- just like last time.
