Boca Raton Interior Redesign FAQ’s-Got the Picture!
Whether you’re selling your home in Boca Raton or are planning a DIY
home project, these Boca Raton Home Interior Redesign FAQ tips can help you bring order to your pictures. Often I see clients take great pains in maintaining their home and making sure things are just so but when they decide to hang their treasures it’s as if they see a blank space, grab their hammer and nails and as long as it’s straight and doesn’t fall down consider it done.
Put the hammer down!
Hanging pictures is not a mystical trick that only trained decorators know.
And keep in mind while there are guidelines, it’s still your home and you choose the rules!
Tip - Every blank wall does not have to have something on it and
every picture you own does not have to be hung.
Something I see in so many homes is that photos, pictures, artwork are hung in any blank space there is with disregard for size, space or visual impact.
Tip-Sofas-pictures hung above a sofa should be between 4-8 inches (some say 3-6, others 5-9”). The point is you don’t want a lot of space between the top of your sofa and the bottom of your picture. Visually you want the viewer to take in the sofa and picture as a whole.
One other point- you don’t want your picture (or picture area) to be longer than your sofa. Always keep proportion.. having your picture cover about ⅔ of the wall above the sofa.
Tip- Look Me in the Eye! I think we’ve all heard this... hang your pictures at eye level- roughly having the center of the picture between 60-65” off the floor. An exception? If the art is hung in the dining room, for example, where the viewing is from a seated position, then you can
go lower.
Tip- In staging we speak of “clutter”... to me that translates to distracting. The same could be said of too many small pictures scattered on the wall. A better option would be larger pictures of groupings where each group is like one larger picture.
Tip- Size does matter. Admit it... you’ve cringed when you saw this little picture on a big wall. Distracting isn’t it? Or conversely when the wall seemed to be engulfed by this too large picture.

Kathy, Really great tips on hanging pictures. I never like to see pictures hanging high over a sofa.
More great (and helpful) tips, Kathy! Hanging wall art or pictures is definitely an art form.
Thanks for sharing!
Jeff
Thanks for the great tips, Kathy! . I think I am beginning to get the hang of it! ☺ ♥
Kathy: Those tiny pictures on a huge wall - why bother because they just look out of place.
Good Afternoon Kathy, Very nice tips ofr pictures and having too much clutter ion a wall. I do think people think that every wall needs to be covered. Congratulations on your feature. Have a great Thursday
Bobbie- Always remember this... it’s your home and you can do whatever you want!
Mike- Most everyone gets it right, the biggest thing I see are pictures hung too high. (or maybe it’s because I’m short????)
Ginny- As many times as I’ve hung pictures, I’ll often have whoever’s helping me move it all over the wall until I get it where I want it.
Conrad-hey... no tough questions allowed after a holiday!! That’s just an average. Some people go with a standard of placing the middle or center of the picture at 57” from the floor.
Kathy- I agree too high! I also see a lot of little pics just hung up on big walls!
James-thank you, sir. Hope this helps with any picture hanging you have coming up!
Toni- When I’m staging a vacant home, getting the pictures hung can take as long as setting up other parts of the house. Definitely takes longer than making up the bed in the Master!
Michael- as far as I know that’s always been the recommendation. I wonder who decides these things, though.
John (QMan)- oh how funny!!!! My friends ask for Larry to hang their pictures because he’s a perfectionist about it and they know when he hangs it they’ll stay up!!! I usually tell him where and let him take it from there. If it’s any consolation to you... I’m not allowed to paint.
Cathy- you are too funny. Well at least you finally appeased your in-laws!! I’m lucky because we have a professional photographer in the family so the group photos are well done.
Kim- I love it! HHA syndrome! Why do you think people do it????
BARFF- hey I forgot to ask you if that critter ever left!
Richie- We’ve made a few too. But now we actually do measure, eyeball it and measure again.
Kristin- I see all these little 3x4” pics hanging in odd places and have to wonder if someone just walked around with a hammer and a nail until they found a blank wall.
Debbie- join the club or as Kim said... the Hung High Art syndrome.
Jeff- thanks. I think that people often think that just because they have a picture it has to be hung somewhere.
Joni- LOL.... I was wondering who was going to use that phrase!!!! Good for you.
Valerie- oh I agree. You have to get your nose right up to them to see them.
Scott- thank you and yes, for some reason, put a hammer in their hand and everything gets hung!
Hell no, it's a nice home now!
Hi Kathy, these are great tips and like your series Interior Design FAQs. What I dislike are photos hanging almost to the ceiling...my friend had her photos so high up that I finally told her they should be eye level...now she is only 4'8" so I said not at your eye level, but at an average level...like maybe the middle and not near the ceiling :)
Good tips, Kathy. I advice my clients to remove the clutter and pack up early. I will include the walls next time too.
Kathy,
As usual great tips for picture hanging...You alwyas have wonderful advice and I appreciate it. A
BARFF- hard to believe it's still around. I think Eddie keeps it around for fun.
Rebecca- oh how funny. My good friend here is about 4'10" but she usually gets my husband Larry to hang pictures for her.
Anja- Don't forget the walls. They're a major part of what people see!
Alexandra- so glad you can use the tips!
Were you following me around today during my vacant staging when the investor was following me around saying "shouldn't there be a picture on this wall".... :) RRRrrrr. You are so right.
Every blank wall does not have to have something on it (today for example) and every picture you own does not have to be hung. (most staging consults I go on).
Hi Kathy. I am glad I stop by tonight, since I learned something new about hanging pictures. Now, I should be able to do a better job at my office.
Kathy-so funny, images of past hammer-wielding clients just came flashing back...but you NAILED it (sorry) that there are some general rules to follow. LOVING these FAQs-BRAVO!
Hi Kathy --- picture perfect(errrr sorry for the pun) post filled with lots of practical advice. Nicely done.
Very good advice for a lot of folks who get some of these wrong (including me sometimes). In my opinion, most people's biggest mistake is over-decorating a home, which is especially inappropriate in staging a home for sale, so I like the part about "not every blank wall needs a picture".
Gretchen
Great advice on hanging pictures Kathy! I have yet to have a client that didn't need advice on this subject! I plan to do a grouping of family photos soon...just haven't had the motivation to tackle it yet.
Hanging photos seems to stump so many people.. I see pictures hung too high all the time.
There is an art to everything and if you dont have it then hire someone who does
Good morning Kathy. I love this. It is a magic skill and I enjoyed reading your post. I'm lucky....I can do it. Enjoy the day.
