Areas to the North of Salida Colorado: Buena Vista Colorado and Nathrop Colorado.
Buena Vista Colorado:
Buena Vista's population is 2134.. a small town with a big heart. Buena Vista has been called a hardworking quiet community. With an elevation of 7965, it is higher than Salida and lower than Leadville, further to the north. Geographically, it is 1/2 way between Salida and Leadville.
To the west of Buena Vista, the Collegiate Peaks rise up, many of which are considered fourteeners... over 14,000 feet. Lakes, creeks, water falls and miles and miles of trails await you, whether you are a hiker, bicyclist or horse rider.
If you like to soak, Buena Vista has 2 hot springs nearby, Cottonwood and Mt. Princeton. Cottonwood has several pools and Mt. Princeton has a lap pool, a soaking pool and Chalk Creek.. soak in the creek, adjusting the rocks to the temperature is perfect.
The Ute tribe inhabited the area for hundreds of years, until other settlers were drawn to the area. The earliest settlers migrating from other parts of the nation were attracted to the Arkansas Valley soon after gold was discovered in the 1860s. Similar to other areas around Salida, they were mainly interested in mining, but some were attracted by the availability of water and good soil which made farming and cattle raising a possibility in the valley. More came with the stage coach era and then the rail road.
Employment: Most folks in the Buena Vista area earn a living either ranching, working for the Buena Vista Correctional Facility, are self employed, or work for the service industry (restaurants, etc.).
Folks who want to ski the big resorts nearer Denver like Breckenridge, stay in BV because it is laid back and much less expensive.
