The Longfellow District is one of the Seven Historic Districts in Iowa City on the National Register of Historic Places. There are also Four Conservation Districts. If you're like me and wondering what the difference is, it has to do with the density of historic homes in a particular district. Homes in the Historic Districts simply have more homes with the historic characteristics required to make it onto the National Register of Historic Places.
The historic nature of the neighborhood makes the Longfellow Neighborhood one of the premier neighborhoods in Iowa City. Longfellow Elementary School is another major factor that contributes to the popularity of the neighborhood, plus of course the fact that the Longfellow Neighborhood is in the heart of downtown. As a college town Iowa City is a busy little town with a lot going on. When you live in the Longfellow Neighborhood you're very close to all the major happenings!

Longfellow Elementary, as the name suggests, is within easy walking distance of homes in the Longfellow Historic District. Don't be surprised to see homes on this list that are nowhere near the Longfellow Historic District and on the far east side of Iowa City. It will be pretty easy to tell them apart - the further away from downtown you go, the newer the houses get. These are the nuances that you need to watch out for if you're relocating to Iowa City. Buyers living in Iowa City know what's close to downtown and what isn't. When you're relocating you rely on information from the Internet and it's not always clear where the neighborhoods are relative to where you want to be. As a rule of thumb, the closer you are to downtown Iowa City the older the houses are. If you're thinking new construction you need to look further afield.
