If we can control our current borders, should the people who own property that extends to the borders of other countries have to voluntarily give up their land to control the border without remuneration? Should they give their property up for free or should they get paid?

It would be nice if they cooperated with the US in their quest to control the US borders, but to what extent.

Should they give it away?  How much money is available to accomodate these people?  Is there any?

What price should they pay? What sacrifices should they make?

I want our borders safe...how are these people to respond?

Curious to other's opinions...please tell me...

We should invade the other countries call them our own and then go into debt rebuilding them to be more vibrant than us.

Take care!

I'm surprised that land along the Us Borders, like Canada & Mexico, don't have an easment for government use. The same way we have utility easements on some properties.

Sean,

I think they do, however, it's my understanding that in order to protect the border more land would be needed.  I mean, I would want the military in my back yard, would you?

The border must be secured. You will find that most people with land on the border would be delighted to give it up if it meant protection. They should be paid for sure, but most would give up money for security. Oh and those who don't want to - I doubt there are any, but.... that is exactly what eminent domain is for.

I've never thought about it, but wouldn't for the most part they actually just get a fence put up for them for free? Unless you are talking about people losing land to a road or a border crossing or something, then I could see your point.

I would think that selling or giving a smal piece of my land to the government would be better than having drug runners going through my back yard.

Simon,

I think they are asking for more than eminent domain...I mean that is 10 feet...to secure the border's I think I would want them to be a little further from my home if they are using guns and ammo...that's just my safety concern...  :-)

Todd,

I don't respectfully think it is that easy, after all they have guns...would you feel safe living on the other side of the 10 foot eminent domain area?  I would rather have them buy me out and move to a safer location...JMO!

Hugh,

I would want to live that close to that situation.  I would rather have them buy me out and mover to a safer location...that's if the government can come up with the money to assist the property owners.

I don't know about others but I wouldn't mind giving up my land IF the government wanted to protect our borders. Unfortunately, the government doesn't.

Andrea,

I saw on TV this afternoon (FOX) that they are advertizing for 6,000 more border control officers...they have 14,000 now and need that many more to secure the US borders...that gives me hope!

As always, the positive one...K

Karen - what makes you think Eminent Domain is 10 feet? That is simply not true. They can take as much land as they want with Eminent Domain. It is only used if owners refuse to sell their land. Eminent DOmain forces them to.

Karen:

We don't need the land.  We have the technology to have a virtual border.

Simon, I stand corrected and you are right!

Bill...You are correct as well, we just need the people to enforce it.

Karen:

My guess is that it would cost less than buying up the land.  Then the gov can have easements for access.

Bill,

I agree with you on that post,..,,.the gov. need's the easements...but I also feel the people that own the land should be given the option to have the gov. buy them out if they are not comfortable with having agent's in their back yards....I mean imagine if they have children...

If I had children and lived right no the border, I'd be bringing the agents glasses of ice tea to keep them in my back yard!
