Traveling with your Pets?

 

Summer vacation is here.  Are you thinking about taking your pets with you?  Have you thought about where they will ride?  The recent roll over car accident of a well known Dog Agility trainer, who lost two of her dogs in the accident, has brought this issue to light. 

Do you wear seatbelts?  Do your kids wear seatbelts?  What about your pets?  Seatbelts have been known to save lives.  So why do we put our kid’s in seatbelts and not our pet’s.   Pet’s are part of our family’s, right?  Wouldn’t you and your family be devastated if something were to happen to your pet should you be in a car accident.

We all know that in a car accident, things from the back of the vehicle fly forward and items in the front of the vehicle fly to the back.  In some cases people and items are thrown completely out of the vehicle.  So what about our pet’s?

I am just as guilty.  They love to ride in the car and hang their heads out the window.  The rollover accident of this well known Dog Agility trainer has opened my eyes.  I now have seat belt harnesses for my k-9 kids.  They are not too fond of them YET.  But they will learn that putting on the seatbelt means they get to go for a ride.  And I will feel better knowing that they are safe and secure.

This accident brought together pet owners and dog sport enthusiasts alike.  They all showed compassion and concern.  And then they brainstormed.  They came up with so many different companies that offer products to protect our Fur Kids.  Kurgo has products for pets on the go.  Pet Tracker has a product that will track your pet through GPS.  Kustom Krates makes custom crates for the serious traveler. Ruff Tough Kennels is another one that has some extremely strong and tested kennels. If you do decide to put them in a krate/kennel be sure to secure it, because it too can fly around inside the car in an accident.

There are so many products you really have to do your research.  But if are traveling with your pets I think it is worth it.  Happy traveling and remember to hug your fur kids tonight.
