Columbus Weathered the Storm

Columbus was hit by a storm a week ago Friday. The storm came through about 5:00 P.M. on Friday June 29, 2012. We've had a little bit of stormy weather since. The storm last Friday was a Derecho.

The photo above was taken in Delaware County in the Lewis Center area along Route 23 (Columbus Pike) just after 5:00 on June 29, 2012.

Thermometer July 6, 2012

Much of central Ohio lost power due to the storm at the end of June. Most of central Ohio NOW has power back or will by the end of this weekend according to AEP.

Columbus and central Ohio are HOT

Columbus broke heat records the last two days, the photo of the thermometer shows 105 degrees on July 6, 2012 but the official temperature at Port Columbus on Friday, July 6, 2012 was only 100 degrees. We are expected to break the record for today, going up to 102 degrees? 104 degrees?

On my Real Living HER website on Local Information under the environment tab, it gives central Ohio weather information inlcluding the average July high temperatures. In the zip codes I live and work, the average high temperature in July is 86 degrees. Columbus and central Ohio like a lot of the Great Lakes region and the East Coast are hot this year. Next week the forecast is more seasonable. It will feel like cool weather to us after this.

What's up with the heat thing? Live in S. Florida from May-November. To cool down think of those that didn't have A/C.

That's some serious oscillation of weather! I heard about the storms on the radio, but not the heat. I wilt over 85 degrees. Last winter we had a power outage and one day didn't go by and I was thinking about how fragile and short term existence is on batteries! Stay cool!

High of 87 degrees today... much better!

Three elderly people died in the county east of us because of the heat and heart conditions.

Most of central Ohio has AC. North-east Ohio and some of the Great Lakes does not need A.C. but we do. I am not an AC person but have enjoyed it this year. I missed it and was panicy the couple of times we lost power over the last 10 days.

Hi Maureen, the notrh has been much hotter this summer than Boca Raton, Florida.

I have seen some snowbirds coming "home" early.

Thanks Irene I hope it cools down and gets wet. We had a little bit of rain Saturday and could get more today... then Monday we go back up into the 90s again.

Maureen - this is a bit weird. We are in the south, and we have lower temperatures, and on the beachside even 90 is not that common. A bit west from the ocean and it is hotter, but still it is just low 90s. On the beachside it is high 80s to 90F.

Plus you got a storm.

I can only imagine people without power in the heat like this.

Jon, Odd, odd summer... the storm is almost a month ago now. That storm probably seems more recent to people who were without power for a week... they've just had power for two weeks. I don't think July has had as much HOT as June did but I think we (Great Lakes) were probably hotter than normal this month too. We are dry, dry, dry. We have possibility of rain most days this week, but I think THAT will be hit or miss. There is a possibility of severe weather for most of Ohio today.

I showed a house last Wednesday evening and the buyers had lost power a couple of miles away, so they texted me they were on their way with flashlights. I ran into traffic lights out and heard there was power out but when we got to the house in an area that is notorious for losing power (big trees and above ground power lines) the house had electricity.

Generators are real popular!

Weird. One would think that Florida is more extreme with its weather, but it is rarely the case, except for the Hurricanes. Summers are very predictable both in terms of temperatures and in presipitation. I remember New york with its crazy shifts from over 100F one week to the 80s next week.

It seems that weather is less a factor in life here than in many other places. Yes, it is hot, but it is the same for 4 months of summer and you get used to the pattern.

Hope you will have all the rain you need.
