Day to Nighttime View of Downtown San Diego

I have always wanted to try my hand at photographing the downtown traffic using a slow shutter speed to get the light trails. I snapped a photo of a late cloudy day in Downtown San Diego on July 4th and then after the fireworks bust, decided that I would try taking a few photos of the traffic to see if could get the light trails associated with moving traffic.

I suppose this isn't bad for a first effort but now that I better understand the required settings, I will likely try this again when I can mirror the shot that is more exacting and where the shutter stays open for several more seconds giving a bit more illumination while still capturing the light streams.

William,

Love seeing the difference of the two...at night watching traffic from a plane about to land, those lights look the lines you have captured in the photo...A

San Diego, a world class city!  And you've provided the pictures to prove it, William!  I'm smiling at Hannah's comment about the Palm trees.  I had a neice, who lived in Oregon, and was in awe of Palm trees when she visited California for the first time.

William, I just love your experiment and the results have paid off. That bottom photo is quite impressive! I just love how your brain works and the fact that you're not afraid to try something new is noteworthy! Good for you William! I just have to suggest and I hope I get my point across because this is feature worthy and you are teaching all of us, who didn't know how to do this to have the courage to read the manuals and try something different.

SUGGEST!!!

I love that slow shutter speed idea with the traffic at night William. It makes the light look continuous.

Hi William - It's really interesting to see places in the daytime and at night.  I like it too when agents do that same with their listing photos on MLS, if the home has nice outdoor lighting.

William, both of these shots are just wonderful.  I'm starting to fool around with night shots, and I've only barely scratched the surface.

Oh my gosh William, your photos are amazing, you always do such great work my friend.  Is that a helicopter I see in your daytime photo?

I like the bottom picture a lot.  I did something similar on New Year's Eve in downtown White Plains, but it didn't come out that well, so I never posted it.  How long an exposure did you do for this?

Great photos!  I hear your fireworks display didn't exactly go as planned--sort of came in with a bang and out with a whimper!

What I love is you never stop seeing what you can see next! On the day time image, I caught the plane. And your night images shows things do go bump in the dark! Thank you for making me smile!

William, very nicely done. Did you use a tripod for the nighttime shot or do you have such a steady hand? San Diego is another one of my favorite cities, I always enjoy your photos!
