3 Comments on Decorating FAQs: Do You Make Money on What We Buy, or Who We Hire?
Marie: Passing on those savings means that your very happy clients will be passing you name on to others. I always ask if I get the discount when I hire trades or other help.
Hi Marie ~ I'm with you on this subject. I seek out great tradespeople and don't expect -- or accept -- a referral fee, since I know that if they take great care of my client, it will reflect well on my company.
When I work with either staging or re-styling/design clients, my time is charged hourly, and my clients may take advantage of my retail discounts at the major stores .... where they pay directly for the merchandise. Recently I took a client shopping for new living room furniture, where she saved more than 30% due to my discount plus the sale price, AND the store also gave her about $300 in credit vouchers for a future visit. She was thrilled and I was happy that she found what she wanted.
Hey Valerie! It is the only way to go now, It highlights us as service providers, not sales people.
MAUREEN! EXACTLY the same thing here with the retail experience...clients really get the best of all worlds when they hire us for this.
AND LADIES-I so appreciate how BOTH of you are such generous sharers of info. Staging is easy to DO, but explaining it to others, framing best business practices, not so much. Your guys are real models to reaching out and offering support and encouragement to your colleagues, any wonder you both commented here?
