What the DECK? Active Rain MUST Know !

deck  Today we are beginning to search for new deck material.  We have a deck that extends across the first floor of our home. In our  exposed ranch, from the back, being built into a hill...it would appear that the first floor is the second floor. When we built the house...we used treated lumber....and knew that someday it would be on the list of things that needed replacing.  So here we are...at "someday."  The supporting posts will be covered with columns giving it a "White House" appearance from the back.  The floor, rail and spindles of a synthetic product...therein lies the research project.....what product is best and what have AR members used and loved.  Maintenance free.....durable....attractive.....sooooo AR...what say you ?Columns

The winning answer for the material we use will be given a special invitation to our "What the Deck" party upon completion....we love to party....adult beverages abound....the best snackatizers anywhere .....sorry can't award points for this one...beyond the scope of my authority.

'Decided to have this post be public....who knows....maybe some deck material manufacturer will want to use our house as a before/after picture....we know that on AR....anything can happen !

Have a wonderfully prosperous week !

Replacing, or remodeling, your deck here would require some changes - your 4x4 columns would need to be upgraded to 6x6s; your columns would have to be attached to the beam with through-bolts; the way your balusters are attached at the bottom would need to be upgraded to look like the white deck on the right; and I can't see it, but you may have to add more attachment to the house, or an interior beam like the white deck on the right.

However, keeping the support material pressure-treated wood and replacing the exposed material with Trex or another composite product is maintenance free and good looking.  You can also make the "new" deck look like the one on the right.  Doing this would minimize the cost.

Attaching the decking boards to the joists from underneath can be easily done and keeps the top surface screw free and much better looking.

Of course, you will need a stylish and colorful umbrella.  I'd go with burgundy and gold...

The picture was not the "real" deck...because of the slope of the lot and right now...the height and opacity of the bushes...

it is not easy to photograph....structurally....it is very sound...and passed multiple inspections from the municipality....the structural Hanson would have to address the specifics....got the umbrella...i think i saw green with that gold...l will give Mr. Hanson your comment.....and extend you an invitation to the party....:)

Hi guys, that composite stuff is cool, but pricey.  But, maintenance free I believe, right?  Love the adult beverages, and Rogers comment too LOL

I've had a wooden deck and a composite one.  We went with the composite one because of it's lack of maintenance and the wooden one at the previous house was so much work.  I wasn't really happy.  It faded and developed stains.   Also the color (like a redwood) that we chose made my house appear pink when the sun reflected off it.   I hope you get an answer because I've not had good luck with decks.
