Ueber den Wolken ... Above the Clouds...
To me, one of the most amazing things about flying is - well - being above the clouds. Even sitting in an airliner, looking out of the small window gives you the feeling of space and freedom that lets you forget all that troubles you on earth.
I was reminded of this feeling again on a recent flight and almost immediately, an old song by German songwriter and singer Reinhard Mey came to my mind.
I'll give you the first lines of the refrain in German followed by my translation. Click on the photo and listen to a rendition by the artist that was recorded 32 years after the original album came out!
I know that my fellow German-speaking Rainers will know this song and won't be getting this tune out of their mind.
muss die Freiheit wohl grenzenlos sein.
Alle Aengste, alle Sorgen, sagt man,
blieben darunter verborgen und dann
wuerde was uns gross und wichtig erscheint,
ploetzlich nichtig und klein.
Above the Clouds,
freedom must me endless,
all fears, all worries, they say
hidden below and then
all that seems big and important to us
suddenly becomes insignificant and small.
Originally released in 1974, the song truly has endured time, still beautiful in its melody and meaningful in its message.
Enjoy.
Über den Wolken muß die Freiheit wohl grenzenlos sein.
Alle Ängste, alle Sorgen, sagt man,
Blieben darunter verborgen und dann
Würde, was uns groß und wichtig erscheint,
Plötzlich nichtig und http://lyricstranslate.com klein.
