Is It Ok to Write About Other Things?

When it comes to writing, one often doesn’t think about who reads what is written. I am guilty of this just like the next person. Just because you think it might be necessary to broadcast it to the world, perhaps the person beside you does not. Read the tips below and keep in mind to keep it short and simple.

If you have just started to blog or not too sure how to go about it, you may have been wondering if it's ok to blog about other things - Meaning ideas and topics outside the main reason you started to blog in the first place.what to blog about

If you started a blog about real estate and you're an agent, naturally most of your blogs are going to be about this. The same can be said for mortgage, staging whatever...

But first, you should figure out what you want your blog to accomplish.

Are you getting clients from it? Venting? Showing off homes or listings? Updating market reports? Displaying current mortgage trends? Discussing inspection options?

A good rule of thumb is to keep at least 60-70% of the blog about the topic at hand. This allows you to get subscribers that follow you just for that reason. If you're into selling real estate and this is your business blog, at least 6-7 out of 10 blogs should be real estate related.

Is it ok to write about other things?

For readers and search engines alike, to be well-known for a blog, you must have some similarities and consistencies to your blogs. If you're all over the board with questions, then recipes, then photos, then listings, than events, then...whatever... People may not know who you are or what you really do.

It's great to be personal though and let people know who you are. I love to cook and throw in a foodie blog once in a while or a personal day activity, but the majority of my blogs are about SEO and more specific SEO for real estate marketing. I post a lot of local posts for my clients that discuss areas, events, services and such but the majority is about SEO and online marketing.

Just be aware of what you want your blog to accomplish and have a specific goal in mind for each blog. That's why we have categories and channels to put all these in to better organize them.

Have fun with your blog but remember its purpose and keep the majority of the focus on your main topic. Google will classify you better, rank you higher and people will learn to follow you for your niche.

Tammy is the expert, and I think her 60-70% rule is good advice. When we blog about other things now and then, it gives people a chance to get a glimpse of who we are. But if we veer off too often or too far, they'll just be confused.
