With the temperature heating up to 90 degrees or more it has many wondering how to escape the heat if you do no have air conditioning in Stamford Connecticut.  Well our town's health and social services has put together Extreme Heat Alerttips with Designated Cooling Centers.someone sweating

The best prevention of heat stroke is to keep on the look out for it and know some of the symptoms:

  • Body temperature higher than or equal to 105 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Mental confusion
  • loss of consciousness
  • convulsions
  • skin that is hot and dry with red spots

If you are experiencing, or know someone experiencing these symptoms, please call 911 or visit an emergency room. Anyone can suffer from heat related sickness, but let's keep a special eye on infants and young children, our elderly over the age of 65 years, those who might have a mental illness or are physically ill.

Here are some tips for dealing with the heat:

Drink more (non-alcoholic) fluids.  Avoid those fluids that contain caffeine or large amounts of sugar. Stay indoors, if possible.  Enjoy some activities, like the movies, window shopping at the Stamford Town Center, or visit the public library and read a book.  even a couple of hours in the cool can help bring down your body temperature.  If possible, take a cool shower or bath.  Wear light weight clothing.

If you are unable to do any of the above, Stamford has in the past held designated cooling centers in the Stamford Government Center and our Fire Houses.  When the temperature spikes, please be sure to visit the Stamford Connecticut's town website for more information and hours.

Hi Kimberly, great advice.  My heart goes out to all those living in the areas of this heat situation.  We are not experiencing hot weather here in Ventura County yet, but I am bracing myself for hot weather arrival, I know we will get some and your advice will be put to use.
