Hibiscus Flowers - It's Not Your Mom's Hibiscus Anymore

Hibiscus-single redHibiscus  is what you think of when you thing about a Florida flowering plant. When I was young, all Hibiscus flowers looked the same. They were a fantastic deep red single flower. Baby, look at them now. They’re a little more expensive and, because our deer are into gourmet hibiscus eating, we don't buy them but they sure are pretty. I just get to enjoy them at the garden shops.

Doesn't this one look like a fantastic sherbert dessert?

Look at those romantic colors- like a deep sunset.

Hibiscus

If you're thinking of selling your home, these would add lots of curb appeal.

Did you know that the Hibiscus is also known as the Rose-mallow; did you know that you can make hibiscus tea (lots of herbal teas are made from Hibiscus) and the petals can be used as edible decorations on cakes? They grow in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Specific types of Hibiscus are used medicinally in China.

I still love the old red ones too, and the yellow ones, and the peach ones.

Lynn - those are beautiful too.

John - they are incredible and take your breath away in real life.

Roger - yes, and Thai restaurants like to use them as garnish too.

Alexandra - I guess because of your Mediterranean breezes :) They are lovely to see massed together.

Toni,

I never realized that at one time they were all the same color. The diversity now is amazing.

Wow!  You captured my attention, Toni.  Love your flower photos and the butterflies on your background, too.

PS  I am here to stay.  See you later.

Howdy and afternoon Toni

Toni my friend, growers sure do come up with mighty fine looking new colors for the different kinds of flowers. Those sure are mighty good looking variety of Hibiscus you have shared with folks.

I do know about Hibiscus Tea and being able to eat the petals. I did not know it is also known by the name of Rose-mallow.

Have a good one

Rich - the old ones are still pretty to have in the yard.

Anita - so true; not just red, pink, white anymore.

Rebecca - I love the yellow ones and the peach ones too.

Mary - that's great news. We will have lots of fun again.

Dale - it is from the species Mallow so I guess that's how it came to be Rose-Mallow.

Joan - I love the multi colored geraniums. When we lived in LA, my front garden was a riot of color with them.

Tony - they sure are. Have a successful week!

Hi Toni, These are a wonderful collection and love the photos. I have seen so many varieties the last few years that I had never seen before. But there is one that is really special. It is called the Bryron Hill Rose Hibiscus and it the most amazing shade of pink. I obtained one was that was used as a fundraiser for breast cancer research. Guessing it must have been a prized hybrid as I have never seen a Hibiscus quite like it. I did a post on it but because I use the iPad so much, I can't add it here for you in case you didn't see it. Even a good photo does do the experience of it justice. The only mistake I made was not gettting many of these since I haven't been able to locate them again.

HI Toni.  Thanks for sharing the photos, they are beautiful flowers.  We see them here in NC in containers to decorate a deck or a patio.

Toni: Lovely photos, as always, and thank you for sharing!  I have had hibiscus tea- it's good, although I'm more of a "Bengal spice" man.  :)

Toni, I'm so glad you posted these photos.  I'm only familiar with those deep reddish ones.  They really remind me of Florida.
