Rich Passage, Manchester, Washington

I had a wonderful summer afternoon this past Sunday on Rich Passage near Manchester, Washington with family. My Grandson Jake graduated from Joplin High in Missouri in May and came up to the Pacific Northwest to visit.

If you’ve ever taken a ferry from Seattle to Bremerton on the Kitsap Peninsula you sailed right by Manchester and through Rich Passage along the southern tip of Bainbridge Island past Port Orchard to Bremerton, home of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Rich Passage was named in honor of William Rich, explorer and botanist, who served on the Wilkes Expedition of 1838 - 1842. Commanded by Charles Wilkes this mostly scientific expedition circumnavigated the globe departing from Hampton Roads, Virginia on August 18, 1838 with a fleet of 6 ships to explore the world.

The Wilkes Expedition was in the Puget Sound region in 1841. They celebrated the first American Independence Day west of the Mississippi in Dupont, Washington, just south of Tacoma on July 5, 1841.

Manchester, Washington has a long naval history and became part of the Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound by the US War Department in 1889 to defend the Naval Shipyards in Bremerton just west of the passage across Sinclair Inlet. In the 1940’s the Navy established a fuel depot which it still uses.

It’s always a treat to watch the Washington State Super Class ferries on the sound, especially when you have such a beautiful up close and personal vantage point. It’s a busy passage and you’ll see a lot of recreational boaters, freighters, navy ships and the occasional escorted submarine from close by Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.

Jake, Tyler, Henri Ann, Charlie, Bev, and Keith.

I think everyone was a little camera shy today, maybe it was me? This photo with my Olloclip fisheye lense was fun. Enjoying a beautiful summer day, great company, and wonderful views over Rich Passage, Manchester, Washington.

Hi Rene...

I felt like I was almost there! And that fisheye lens is awesome ... and one that I have always wanted to add to my camera bag but have not done so yet!

Endre: Indeed, Rich lives near by. I was going to give him a call but I new the day was going to be filled with family activities. I'm going to hold him to his promise of fresh crab though!

Richard: I'm loving my Olloclip lens for the iPhone 4s. I feel like I'm not all that good at it yet, but I see the potential. I lost 2 of my best cameras this year, and 2 video cameras. After some research I found the Olloclip for @ $70.00 at Fry's or Best Buy. This seemed the best route to go as a leep frog solution until I can afford some new cameras, I'm taking it like a challenge. What can you do with an iPhone and an Olloclip? Let's find out! I've had some really great (so far accidental) results. I love fisheye, there's a neat kind of drama to it and implied expression. Thanks for the feature!

Hi Rene,

Great pictures and what lovely scenery there. Jake looks like a very smart and strapping kid and I am sure he will be a productive and mature adult. I love the fisheye lens but have never heard of it before. Very creative idea!

Looks like the graduation was a lot of fun.

William: Thanks my friend. I wish I had more opportunity that day to take more photos. I'm missing my Fuji camera! Love the iPhone, but the fuji was such a cool camera.

Hi Myrl... thanks. I was totally surrounded by beauty that day. Just point the camera and shoot! I'm going to experiment more with the fisheye lense.
