The Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area is a great place to spend some time with the family without breaking the bank, in fact, it's absolutely free to visit. There is a box for donations at the front of the park, and I'm sure the Lower Trent Conservation Authority would appreciate some financial support, but if you don't have it, you can still walk or bike the trails.
It's certainly a very scenic area, and the walking trails are not difficult (depending on your tolerance for walking I suppose), the entire family will be able to enjoy an outing here. There's a junior loop that is great if you happen to have smaller kids with you, while the more
adventurous types will probably enjoy the longer 12 km trail.
The entire area is situated on a 441 acre parcel of land that contains a variety of natural delights.One of the trails will have you climbing up an esker, and your legs will know when you've reached the peak. In the winter time many cross country ski enthusiasts take advantage of this large conservation area.
Getting here by car is quite easy, just exit the 401 at Highway 30 and travel north until you see the signs for it. It's close to Brighton, Campbellford and Warkworth, so it's not exactly in the middle of nowhere.
The Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area is part of a prairie savannah that has mostly been wiped out due to the rapid development of Southern Ontario. In fact, less than one percent of this savannah remains, which is why the Lower Trent Conservation authority is working hard to restore this important wildlife habitat and ensure the survival of the plants and animals that once were so plentiful in southern Ontario.
Come for the day and enjoy this wonderful area, you will be happy you did, but please take your garbage out of the park with you. Goodrich-Loomis is not a campground, so it's day trips only, but I can guarantee you, it will be a very pleasant day. Don't forget your sunscreen and bug spray, otherwise it probably won't be as pleasant as it could be.
