Does your Home Owner’s Insurance provide coverage for Flood?

This is an important question you need to check in your insurance policy. Many home owners often mistakenly believe that flood insurance is only needed or are only available for properties that are located in a flood hazard area or otherwise known as “flood zone”.

The best way to compare this response would be like saying, that your policy only covers Fires if you are located in a high Fire hazard zone, otherwise you do not need it.

To clarify this misconception, let me tell you that, flood is one of the most common natural disasters in the US. Floods can result from torrential rainstorms and or hurricanes. Keep in mind it is not geographically limited. Floods can be caused by melting snow as another example. Areas that had recently had new construction could have had the water drainage patterns altered, hence could be potentially in a flood area.

Flood Insurance is a must for all home owners,Endre Barath

So if you live in one of the 50 states of the US you could be affected by floods. So please do not wait for disaster to strike, be proactive and check out your policy and if it is not covered get a binder to cover it.

So do not become a victim of uninsured flood loss that you can cover easily.

Great advice... even in the desert we are in danger of flooding.  We get such infrequent rainfalls that even a little bit of rain can result in flooding.  K

Laura, many times insurance agents are not comfortable to present the additional cost hence they do not bring it into the conversation and they are doing a disservice to the Home Owners!

Kathy how true I am always amazed when I see it on the news that on the way to Vegas from Los Angeles the roads are flooded because of heavy rainfalls! Great reminder, thank you!

Hi Endre - Great advice. After the fires earlier this summer, we have now an increased risk of flash floods, because of the loss of vegetation in the mountains and foothills - we've already seen several in the foothills to our west. I wonder if a plague of locusts is next.

Dick how unfortunate the number one Natural Hazard is Fire followed by number two Floods according to the insurance industry and they are so interconnected.

Barbara Jo it is ironic that most people are not aware of this hazard inspite that it is one so wide spread.

Endre, great post...suggested...I'm really surprised at how many people don't know that flood coverage is a separate animal.

Nick what I find sad is that Insurance Agents do not explain this to the homeowners!
