Hastings real estateThe village of Hastings is the home of lock # 18 on the Trent Severn waterway. It's about 30 minutes north of Cobourg in Northumberland County and boasts one of the best full service marinas on the entire waterway. This little town of about 1200 people is a fisherman's dream and calls itself the Hub of the Trent, a well deserved title. Hastings is a Trent Hills community and a very beautiful little town.

Hastings was at one time a very important commercial hub, as the lumber from the Peterborough area passed through the lock at Hastings on its way down to Lake Ontario. This commercial activity was largely responsible for the growth of the town.

Hastings is one of those charming "cottage country" towns today, just situated on the eastern boundary of the region known as the Kawarthas. The Kawarthas have thousands of fresh water lakes and have been a recreational centre in Ontario for generations. Hastings in particular is quite popular with boaters because there are over 60 kms of lock free boating between locks # 18 and 19, so the fun can stretch on for miles and miles.

Because the town is such a draw for boaters it has a busier downtown core than similarly sized towns with more shops and restaurants than one would expect. It certainly has that small town Ontario feel to it, and it's fun to take a stroll through town and check out the cenotaph, the legion, the old churches and the other buildings that make towns like this memorable on a warm summer's day.

If you are thinking of buying or selling in the Village of Hastings, or are looking for your next cottage, give me a call, maybe I can help.

Malcolm, looks like our type of place.  Wish you area is closer to Erie, PA.  A few years ago we took our boat through the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Rochester, NY area.  Great trip.

Great localism post.

Hi Mary, we get a lot of boats crossing the lake from Rochester and coming up the Trent Severn, apparently it's a great boating outing.

Malcolm, this town seems so familiar, I am sure we have happened upon it on one of our pleasure drives while at the cottage, if not, you know we will make it a destination on one of our future drives...
