The arts are alive and well in North County, and with the new LUX Art Institute facility (the institute was founded in 1998) in Encinitas, things have reached a new pinnacle.
Granted, the area is not known (yet) as a center for the arts, but we are seeing many strides made in the availability of high-quality art in communities like Encinitas, Carlsbad (a town with its own fine reputation as an art community) and Solana Beach’s Cedros District.
LUX Art Institute is a treasure, AND a unique concept in our area. The unique structure of this new building (designed by architect Renzo Zecchetto) itself is a work of art that blends with the surrounding environment, and perhaps symbolizes the unique perspective of the institute…the relationship between artist and viewer that evolves from the “artist in residence” concept, allowing one to watch and experience artists at work as well as to enjoy completed creations.
LUX allows us to view art as well as to view its creation, to interact with the artist, and to come to understand the foundation of the creator’s inspiration and emotion as the piece unfolds. As Director Reesey Shaw says so eloquently,
“Lux is about access to art. By focusing on living artists, and the art they create, we give visitors an unprecedented look inside the creative process.” (from the LUX brochure)
The first artist in residence was TOMAS RIVAS (Nov. 1 – Nov. 29), from Chile, whose magnificent creations evolved from simple sheetrock (see photos). The next artist who arrives January 31, is ASTRID PRESTON, a Los Angeles landscape painter, whose work will be on exhibit from February 9 through March 22, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held February 9 from 7 – 9 pm.

LUX offers lectures and artist-led workshops, as well as a monthly reception for the public on the 3rd Wednesday every month where viewers can enjoy the works on display, refreshments, and studio tours.
LUX Art Institute is located at 1550 South El Camino Real, a short distance beyond Santa Fe Road. You can reach them at (760) 436-6611. Their hours are Thursday and Friday from 1 – 5 pm, and Saturdays from 11 am – 5 pm.
Enjoy the show (there is music)
