"Friggatriskaidekaphobia and The Art of Selling Houses" Musings on Friday - 7/13/2012

SuperstitionsDo you suffer from "friggatriskaidekaphobia?" Sounds just a little bit naughty doesn't it? Don't worry, it's not. The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia. Basically, today is the day when superstitious folks worry about everything and avoid any behavior that could put them at risk. And in spite of our contemporary lives, superstitions abound in our daily lifestyles - even when it comes to real estate.

The term superstition is thought to derive from the Latin superstitio, meaning "to stand over in awe." Many superstitious beliefs date back many centuries and have some basis in history. For example, my Italian father in law used to throw salt over his shoulder after spilling salt. The origin of this messy (someone has to clean it up ) ritual comes from biblical times. One explanation refers to Lott's wife who looked back yearningly on Sodom when being led to a more moral place. An angry God, furious with her lack of morality, turned her into a pillar of salt. Ouch! That's going to leave a
mark.

Superstitions

OK, so maybe I do have a few rituals myself, like saying "God bless you" when someone sneezes. Or knocking on wood for good luck. And yes, I always walk around a ladder, never under it. Some might even consider my use of feng shui as a bit "woo woo".

Superstitions

In the world of Real Estate, there are superstisions surrounding the Art of Selling Houses.

There's a St. Joseph kit for house sellers - really. Apparently, if you bury the statue of the Saint upside down in your yard, read a prayer related to getting the house sold, it will sell. Cool beans, and there are a few sellers who say it works. No doubt the logical person would attribute the sale to unrelated causes, or the optimist would claim it was the power of positive thinking.

However, most of the time getting a house sold is all about the price and the condition. If the house shows well, if it's in good or better condition compared to the competition, and is priced right, it will sell. There's no luck involved in that. But it is also important to have the right Realtor®. One who is not afraid to tell you to fix those broken steps or power wash the moss off the deck. Or remind you to clear the living room of all those personal relics so buyers can see themselves in the home. One who will show you what similar houses are selling for, and price yours accordingly.

So, Happy Friggatriskaidekaphobia, it's Friday, July 13, 2012, and remember if you need to sell a house in Clark County, Washington, you know who to call.

Debb,

I just realized it was the 13th, woo woo...That is traditionally when scary movies open also.  There is also the Chinese Way to sell a house, which is  to throw rice along the parameters of the house...of course if you have a manse, you may have to go to Costco to economize/  LOL

HI Gary, once did a radio news story on the whole Friday the 13th stuff, that's the ONLY reason I know about this one.

Hi Alexandra, I did sell a house to a beautiful Chinese woman several years ago, there were a series of rituals prior to moving in...I was fascinated. And, I love your Costco line...:)

Good for you Q man. I see you are now an Ambassador too...wh, wh, what? All my good pals are now Ambassadors...does that mean I have to courts every time one of you comes to visit? Ha. Seriously, congrats.

Debb, Yikes!  What a word, however, it is fun to know that there is an explanation for everyone's fear of Friday the 13th.  Like you and others here in the Rain and elsewhere I have my share of superstitions.  I might even have to re-blog to help enlighten the rest.

Roger Dodger! Lol. You always make me laugh...well, most of the time. Some of your stories are so touching that they can also reduce me to tears. That's a gift.

Mel, glad it's been a good day. I too have generally felt lucky on Friday the 13th, and Thursday the 12, and Saturday the 14th...you get the drift. :)

I did not know Friday the 13th had a name. A lot of tall buildings will avoid having a 13th floor especially because so many people feel just the way you described.

Debb, I had some friends that were so keyed into Friday the 13th being a good day that they planned their wedding for that day. Then their daughter did the same thing when she got married. I sold them a house next to a small cemetary but it was okay because the address was 1313.

Debb, I had clients that seriously wanted to know how many houses with st. joseph buryed upside down worked.. ? to tell you the truth I had not heard of that  one before. I thought they were kidding. THey were buying from me and selling an old condo in another area with a different realto... and it was not selling. The condo association was not happy with them digging a hole in the ground and they blamed it on that... and so it goes..

Debb, this shoulda been featured. I love the info, the fun knowledge (I didn't even try to say that word out loud), but I DO know about the upside down St. Joseph. My mom even clipped an article out of her FLA newspaper about this. Apparently, there are some who've had luck with this when nothing else worked. Now....do you take it with you when the house DOES SELL??

Or is it just lucky ONCE? hMMMM....

Anita. Roger has a good sense of humor and often makes me laugh.

Hi there Mary, thanks for the reblog and it's great to see you.

Jill, I know, it's kind of silly.

Debbie, now that's a fun twist. :)

Janis, I do know several who claim it works...as I mentioned, the power of positive thinking?  Or maybe coincidence.

Hi Gayle, I have never used this method, so I have no idea if it stays, goes with the seller...etc. I too have heard it works...hope you're looking forward to a good weekend. My husband gets home this morning, I'm running around changing sheets and getting things spiffed up - :) I missed him...decided a couple of days is fine, but by day 3, I really missed his presence.

Thanks for explaining Friggatriskaidekaphobia.  Dolores and I made Friday the 13th a special day with a visit to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Have a wonderful weekend now that you do not need to worry about a black cat crossing your path.

Roy, you are welcome. We can even walk under ladders today. It was so funny, last night I was walking Mac in the neighborhood, and a black kitty was sitting across the street from us...I paused thinking, "Don't run in front of us kitty." Silly ole superstitions. :)

Hi Debb~ I don't consider myself a superstitous person.  I do say "God bless you" when someone sneezes. So maybe I have some rituals.  I notice that Rachel Ray ALWAYS throws salt over her shoulder when she's cooking with salt.  I think that's a bad habit and something I would NEVER do.
