My TV Review of Property Wars . . .

BARF

That's my review.

The series Property Wars played out like anything else on TV . . . contrived, unrealistic, scripted, predictable, formulatic . . . which garners the "BARF" review

Property Wars is entertaining for the "What are you nuts?!?" value.  It's like the Three Stooges on a home buying spree.  Each "investor" is out to poke the eyes out of the next guy and yuk-yuk-yuk.  If one stooge doesn't get the one up-man-ship on the other, not to worry . . . the stooge will self-destruct all on his own.

The "investors" of Property Wars go out to look at homes that are up for auction in the Phoenix, AZ real estate market.   The show's premise is that none of the stooges investors are allowed to pre-tour the properties prior to making their bids.  I think that's a bunch of hooey.  I saw combo boxes on the front door.

Would anyone in their right mind bid on a house sight unseen?!?  Only on Property Wars.

The Property Wars formula:  There are 4 sets of "investors" and during the 30 min. episode they are going to look at 3 different properties.  The premise is that none of them have entered the property, so they are bidding blind.  WHO DOES THAT?

So, the 4 sets of Property Wars investors arrive at the property.  They don't go inside and base their bids on: 1) what they think the property is worth in current condition (which they, presumably, have no way of knowing), 2) what they have budgeted for updates (which they have no way of knowing), and 3) how they are going to make out like bandits on this deal.

Magically, the Property Wars bidding starts at the exact time they are all at the property. They have their partner at the auction site who places the bids and communication is done via cell phone.  One investor backs out.  One investor drives the price up on purpose.  One investor has second thoughts and bails.  One investor gets the winning bid.

Then the winning investor gets the keys to the property.

CUT TO COMMERCIAL -- oh the suspence, the drama, the anticipation.

Back from commercial break they open the door and see . . . the mess, or the move-in ready.

Rinse and repeat.

Kids don't try this at home.  Investing in real estate is not "As Seen On TV"  No one buys a home without touring it and performing due diligence.  No one buys into a investment property without knowing what the costs will be to re-hab.

Property Wars is a combination of the 3 Little Pigs meets the Three Stooges.  An unreality show which is entertaining because it's so ludicrous.

Hi Anna B -- if you've not watched the show, you might find it entertaining, at least you'll see your market on the telly!

I never even heard of it Carla.  Of course now that I've found I can watch some television from the 60s on netflix, after I see the weather every morning (which is a re-run, hot with chance of afternoon thundershowers), I just watch netflix when I'm not working or playing.  Right now we are watching the original Dark Shadows.

Hey Tammy -- my son is watching the original Dark Shawdows series too! Then he'll see the Tim Burton flick.  And trust me, you're not missing anything with Property Wars.

Carla - Just like "Flip that House," such shows make the impossible appear simple, and they do it in an hour or less--with, of course, lots of fabricated drama.

I haven't seen it, and after your review I think I will take a pass and go read a book.

Makes for more good ratings and more unrealistic ways to buy a home on investment.  Soon we will get the buyers who want to become investors since they've seen how to do it on HGTV....you know, like the rest of the shows that show just how "realistic" buying and selling is in the "real" market...

Carla,

Based on your review, it would seem that property wars is destined for the dustbin soon.

Glad I missed the opportunity to watch Property Wars  Sounds like the TV producers are starting to get desperate for ideas.

Hi John . . . fabricated drama, you got that right!!

Hey Kathy -- I'm reading a book by Art Linkletter circa 1957 "Kids Say the Darndest Things" (my son found in at Goodwill for $2.00).  Now THAT was reality TV at it's finest, and it's also a good read!!

Hi Brenda . . . very unrealistic.

Hey Karen -- you're welcome LOL

Hi Richard . . . let's hope so!

Hey Cindy -- desperate is right!!

Hi Karen . . . it's something I love to hate, purely trash TV

Hey Peggy -- I hope no one actually buys property this way

Hi Pamela . . . so true

No thank you to Property Wars, flip This House, Home With Holmes (or whatever the name of that show is). I'll just stick with the home decorating shows. Even if you can't afford to do some of the things that they do, you can get some great and REALISTIC ideas.

Have you ever been to a Trustee Sale?  I can tell from your blog that you haven't.  The properties sold at a Trustee Sale are NOT marketed.  One can NOT see the inside of the house prior to a purchase.  Properties sold at the Trustee Sale are not for the average home buyer.  They are purchased by investors, like the ones in the show.  Perhaps before you spew out a bunch of garbage you THINK MIGHT be right, you should do your research.

Hey Ali -- PRIOR TO THE TRUSTEE SALE the home was more then likely available For Sale.  After the notice of default, most people try to sell their home and those notices go out to all the vultures in the area too. They bird-dog properties all the time.

I don't care what kind of sale it is.  It's still a TERRIBLY bad, canned, scripted show.  And my opinion, is based on the fact that it's a crappy barf-o-tastic show that is so formulatic and simple it makes the equation 2 + 2 = 4 seem complicated

Hi Carla --- didn't see nor have I heard of this show.  Some of these Real Estate shows may be fun to watch but strictly for entertainment or the laugh factor and certainly REALITY rarely, if ever, enters the picture.  I think on some level some of these programs have made the suggestion of professional staging easier to approach with some clients.

Hi Carla, I can't watch that kind of contrived 'Reality' tv. I just end up yelling at the screen, so it's not worth my time. Great review, very accurate for that type of show!
