I ran an interesting test to see how well my articles showed up in Bing and Yahoo compared to Google.  Everyone is so busy thinking about how they rank in Google, the often forget to look at the other search engines.  Bing, from Microsoft, is certainly worth checking.  Call me a die-hard but I still like Yahoo. My test involved an article about the 33rd Annual Los Altos Art & Wine Festival - the largest such event in the Bay Area.

Google Ranking

When I search for either the original Activerain article, I rank on Page 2 in 4th position.  This is not exactly going to be the place to drive lots of traffic.  I rank behind the hosting organization by a long shot and behind a fellow blogger in the area.  Why is that?  My guess at this point is backlinks - I've only got a couple.  Plus, not enough embedding in my own domain.

Bing Ranking

On Bing I'm on Page 1 in 2nd postion.  Excellent!  I'm above all news articles, the local paper, Patch, and even KTVU (TV!).  This is proof that whatever works to optimize on one search engine doesn't necessarily mean much on the next search engine.

Yahoo Ranking

On Yahoo, I'm on Page 1 in 2nd position just like on Bing.  That's no surprise because...Yahoo is powered by Bing so it's a 2 for 1 deal.

Do I care about other search engines?  Yes and no.  Let's face it, Google is the "go to" engine for most people.  I even tried "Ask.com" which is often installed as a task bar search in people's browers.  On that, I was on page 2 position 7 - terrible!

My conclusion:  While Google is important, I think Bing (and Yahoo) are as well.  I'll make a habit of checking all of them from time to time to see how well I rank everywhere.  It's important to get a "big picture" view of where people can find you.

I always check all of them too.  I also go to ask.com and check that.  I use figit and it tells me which SE people find me via and it's not ALWAYS google.

Google is the whole pie so all the others I am not sure really matter.

Bryan - I used to check these occasionally, and I probably need to start again to review sometimes.

Bryan: I occasionally check Bing to see where's I stand with particular post. I don't like Bing and I think most people use Google. After all most people "google it" than "bing it".

Good Evening Bryan,

You are on point.  I was recently checking the placement of my website, only to find out that it was increasing on google, but non-existent on both bing and yahoo

Hi Bryan,

What you say is so true!

And yet it seems so onerous to keep up with the big three search engines...

Thanks for sharing

I agree.  It took me a long time to get on board with Google because I was personally a Yahoo searcher.  Thank goodness we only have to keep up with 3 of them.

Bryan-So many issues to keep track. You are right about an almost tunnel vision view of wanting to get on top in Google. But Bing and Yahoo are not to be ignored. Thanks for the reminder.

I find most my websites rank much better in Bing and Yahoo, but don't care because that's not where it's happening.  I'd receive much more business if they were at the top of Google, so that's the search engine I strive for.

Hi Bryan, I think you make a great point.  Google is huge, but one should check out the others.  I recently did this and my results (from Awstats) for my main website are as follows:  Google-- 72.5%, Yahoo!--15.4% and Bing--7.3%.  That means that alomst 25% of my traffic is coming from something other than Google, which is significant enough for me to track those as well.

I agree that as BING gets more and more popular, it will be important to rank higher on that page as well. Yahoo is doesnt appear to be a huge search site, although Im sure its used... just not quite as much as the other two.

It took me 18 months to be on first page of Google but only 3-4 weeks to be the top link of Yahoo and Bing. I sure love them very much!

Yeah, good points Bryan. I think we should also pay some attention in different search engines. Thanks for sharing.

Bryan

It is important to consider all the major search engines for even though G has the majority share, I believe it is only a little above 50% and that leaves almost half of the people searches out of the loop if one does not rank high on all. Just wanted to let you know I found this from a repost by David above. cheers cvc
