Tucked away in a small, older strip mall in southwest Denver is Lao Wang Noodle House. The store front of this tiny, hole in the wall, Chinese eatery is so small that it could be easily missed. But the food at Lao Wang Noodle House is well worth the effort of finding.
I tried Lao Wang Noodle House on the recommendation of my friend Susan Leieritz. Susan and her husband Dan have a knack for finding these little out of the way places that have great big flavor...Lao Wang is no exception.
When I first walked in to Lao Wang Noodle House, I was greeted breifly, then seated by an elderly asian man who didn't say much. I soon realized that the reason for this was that he doesn't speak much English, if any. An elderly Taiwanese couple run the entire restaurant.
The seating capacity for Lao Wang Noodle House probably tops out at 25 people, that's how small it is. Maybe it should be called a "micro-restaurant".
Susan specifically instructed me to try the Xiao Long Bao. Translated, this means "small bamboo basket stuffed dumplings". Now I love Chinese dumplings of every sort. Some of you may remember my two blogs about dim sum at Super Star Asian Cuisine. I have tried every dumpling I have ever found, and the Xiao Long Bao is really different. Instead of the dumplings being served in a broth, the broth is actually encased in the dumplings! You definately want to eat them with the provided spoon. They kind of "squirt" when you bite into them. Yum...
For my mail course, I had cold chicken noodles (because it was so hot out). Served in an interesting and tasty peanut sauce, these noodles hit the spot.
Interestingly enough, the pot stickers at Lao Wang Noodle House are not shaped like other pot stickers I've had. No, they are long and thin instead of the traditional half moon shape. The couple at the next table over couldn't stop raving about them and in fact, ordered another plate because they liked them so much.
Lao Wang Noodle House is not fancy, on the contrary, in fact it's pretty drab on the interior, but try it out none the less. You'll be impressed with the food I am quite certain.
