NM Coyote Encounters

Albuquerque and surrounding NM hiking trails are open and hikers are exploring the trails in full force.  Recently there have been a couple of coyote encounters that resulted in attacks on dogs.

Coyotes normally don’t see adult humans as a food source and usally will not attack.  They do see pets and small children as a food opportunity.  NM Wildlife officials say if you encounter a coyote make yourself look big, throw rocks or anything within reach at the animal the coyote will probably run off.  Be wise and keep children close to you and pets on leash to prevent coyote attacks.

Keep in mind a sick animal is always unpredictable so be aware of your surroundings at all times and be aware of NM coyote encounters.

Hi John - Running into coyotes while hiking or walking the trails around our neighborhood is a pretty common occurrence - actual interaction problems do happen but are rare. They do come in the neighborhood at night, though, to hunt for cats, rabbits and ground squirrels, and make a huge racket.

It's uncommon to see them in our neighborhood, but it has happened. They generally seem to be uninterested as they trot along, usually seen at night while out walking. Definitely would not stop me from buying a home in their territory. bet you have several to show.

John ~ not long ago I looked out the window and saw a coyote just sauntering down my street, in the middle of the day.  There are lots of coyote sightings around here in the evenings and for the most part, people are concerned about protecting their cats and dogs.

Saw a coyote in my neighborhood last fall.  Freaked me out.  The outdoor cat quickly became an indoor cat.

They sure look like you would want to cuddle them.  But, then again, many beautiful, furry creatures do.  Good reminder that you have to keep in mind they are not pets, and nobody wants to be a food opportunity for a coyote ....

Hi John -- we've had some wild intruders in our hillside areas ---- bears in swimming pools and spas or just lounging on decks.  Coyotes are pretty common too.  It was probably their territory long before it was ours.

Good reminder John. We have Coyote sighting here as well and it scares me. They are likely looking for food and it's important that people keep an eye out.

We have them in our area as well and from time to time see one in the backyard if we get up extra early........those and bobcats. They see us and run.

John - Great tips on dealing with New Mexico Coyotes.  We have them here in Tahoe and people with small pets (dogs and cats) and small children need to be very aware of the danger the wildlife can pose to them - especially coyotes.

The only animal I have ever hit with a car was a coyote. I think I cried for two days....

What are you doing working on John McCormack Day? I called in the office and told them I wouldn't be there today in honor of the event.

Really I threw my back out Saturday while playing with the dogs. They got a two hour run in the rain, and I got a sore back. So I'm going to the doc today.

Coyotes are becoming a big problem in Westchester County and have definitely attacked and killed some smaller dogs-very scary to have children in the surrounding areas who could be hurt.  Never let go of their hands!

John  Coyotes are not a major threat here in Northern Virginia, but I remember them well from my NM days

Hi John.  I think the most we see is foxes this side of town.  If I saw one I probably didn't know it!

Now that would be unnerving to be approached by a coyote John especially a sick coyote. Yes when outdoors keep pets and children close.

We have seen a couple in our yard over the past couple months. Normally we only see one, but about 2 months ago we saw three together. We heard rumors that it was mating season and that is why we saw them together.

Greetings -

Unfortunately mankind has invaded coyotes to the point we are now forcing them to come into our worlds.  NM Coyote Encounters are certainly on the rise.  We see them wondering the neighborhoods, streets. arroyos and yes many pet are now MIA.  No doubt they have encountered coyotes and met their demise.

Remember coyotes are not tame.  They are wild animals and when encountered do as instructed * make yourself look big, * shout, scream, * throw things at them.  Remember to keep small children and pets near and out of harm from a hungry coyote.

Your comments and input has been most appreciated and instead of replying to you individually here I have read and left a comment on each of your posts.

Until we meet again my friends... Let it Rain -

John

John, we've had a few coyote encounters around here. A friend of mine walks her small dogs at night and has had coyotes within 10 feet of her obviously interested in her pugs...she carries a hand gun now.
