Will our comments help other ActiveRainers with SEO exposure?

By

I had the pleasure of attending one of the great webinars put on by ActiveRain's own Bob Stewart .  In this webinar, we reviewed a few great blogs from others and Bob gave his opinions of the key word content and gave some excellent suggestions on the usage of keywords.  He went further to discuss "keyword phrases" versus "semantic phrases."  So, I got to wondering - do our comments help our fellow bloggers get any SEO exposure and emailed Kerrie, who forwarded on my email to Bob.

Bob took the time to email me a couKeywords versus semantic words in Active Rainple of times with some great explanations and examples along with his opinion how our comments could help others with SEO.  Here's how it went:

Me:  Do our comments help other bloggers?

Bob:  They have the potential to help if done right. It used to be that keyword density was a factor in rankings. So if you left a 100 word comment, it would be a good idea to use their target keyword maybe two times. Then you get an additional amount of content and you keep good keyword density.

Me:  Can you give an example?

Bob:  Today, the suggested usage of the keyword is 3-5 times. The author will generally accomplish that in their post. However, the idea of semantic keyword phrases as a complement to the main keyword phrase is where members commenting on each other's posts could help.    A semantic phrase is a similar but different phrase that would relate to the keyword phrase. For instance, if my post was about: Homes for sale with a Basement in Seattle, Then some semantic phrases could be:

houses with a basement in seattle

seattle real estate with a  basement

Seattle houses that come with basements

homes for sale in seattle with a finished basement

Me:  So we shouldn't be repeating the keyword by saying homes for sale with a basement in Seattle?

Bob:  You wouldn't want to leave that same keyword phrase in your comment. You would want to leave a semantic phrase.......similar but not the same.     You might say something like:

"Bob,   I know that homes with a  basement in Seattle are pretty desirable because they give the homeowner so much extra room. Many of my buyers like buying a home for sale with a finished basement. I'm sure homes in Seattle selling with finished basements command a higher price but I've also had many home buyers that love the idea of buying a home with an unfinished basement because it gives them a blank slate that they can mold to their own desires."

I had a "light bulb" moment because of Bob's generous time and great examples.  Thanks, Bob. I hope to make my future comments as meaningful as my future blogs.  You've given us such a great idea of how we can help our fellow ActiveRainers.

Bob, Mark brings up an interesting question - does it help me or the original blogger, or perhaps both?

Now I understand why some people have been leaving comments that sound a bit like they're repeating what I wrote in my blog.  It's all been a boost to my SEO.  Who knew that using semantic phrase could be so useful for SEO. Thanks!

makes good sense...but in the end, how many people can come in on the first page etc...of any search. How many can stay there is another good question...this appears to be an ongoing full time process

Hi Juli~ I try to use the subject line in my comments when I'm commenting about a property or a community event, or the like.  It's great to know that there are simple ways to help each other!

Now I've heard everything. I can't believe he was serious about trying to optimize comments for Google. He was probably talking on theory that it might help. I'd hate to think that he would actually encourage people to do this. I think it would sound silly and if enough people did it not many people would continue reading comments. It would be a sad day if this were to become common place.

Tim, I have to disagree with you.  If people are looking by keywords, maybe something in one of our comments directs a searcher to the comment, which leads to the original blog.  I have actually googled myself and found me through a comment, which took us to someone else's blog.  Heck, what can  it hurt if we ALL use "key words" or "semantic phrases" to help others.  One thing's for sure, the more time any searcher spends on a page, the more SEO juice it gets.  So, if I have to take 30 seconds or a minute to comment on your blog, (I type really, really fast), that's more time YOUR blog is getting attention.  Thoughts?

Let me try to address some of the comments and mainly, the concerns.....

Tim (comment #33):

I promise you haven't heard everything. One thing I always preface any SEO discussions with is (something along the lines of you calling it theory) these are best guesses (I put that in my email to Juli). Google doesn't tell us: here is exactly what you do. No one knows the secret sauce, we just look at our experience. Yes, in theory it might help. If you wanted to try to help someone with the comments you are leaving, semantic phrases are the way to go. My example may have been a little dramatic but I was trying to drive home my point. A few years ago we had a large group of members that did this with each others posts and it did help them. That was back when keyword density was important so leaving the keyword phrase in the post would help. Today, keyword density is not a factor the way it once was.

The reality is, most blog posts intended for the public get no comments. If you are going to leave a comment on another members public facing blog post, having a strategy isn't going to hurt you.

Mark (comment #20):

The goal would be to give the blog post additional firepwower (as you put it). The idea is that Google likes great content. If the comment actually adds valuable content to the post, it's going to help. (As Tim said, in theory.....)

Endre (comment #11):

It doesn't have to be a 100 words. The idea would be, just leave a comment that actually adds something to the discussion. Google is getting much better at identifying real content. Meaning it has sentence structure, paragraph structure, and uses words that actually make sense. Assuming your comment actually makes sense, and supplements the original piece of content, it's going to help.

I like the idea of figuring out some way to award more points for valuable comments..........but I'm not sure it's at the top of our list of enhancements. I'll make sure it gets added to our list at least to have a discussion about it.

Janis (comment #2):

I would refer you to my answer for Endre. They don't need to be that long, but they need to add value if possible.

Hope that helps......

Bob & Juli I love it! I like the idea of incentives for valuable comments vs punishment for less than valuable comments. Like the ones we do during Holidays:))) for every cut and paste comment deduct 20 points:)))

Juli- I cannot believe I'm just now seeing this excellent and feature worthy post.  I was at the same webinar and for anyone reading this, if you haven't attended one, you're really missing out.   I've noticed that many commenters try to help us with using key words or semantics in their comment and John McCormack is so good at doing it.

Google changes how they view pages all of the time, which is why it has been such a plus being on Active Rain and reading all of this helpful information.
