Who Would You Feel More Comfortable With?

My husband and I went mattress shopping this past weekend.  Boy, was that an experience!

We went into many different stores: mattress stores, department stores, outlets, etc.  You name it, we were probably there.  What I noticed in every store were the types of sales people we came across.

The one type of salesperson we met was a pushy one.  This was the type we were dreading.  As soon as we walked into the store, she was there.  Instead of letting us look around, right away she started her sales pitch.  First, we were to lie down on this bed that was hooked up to the computer and the computer was going to tell us what sort of bed we needed.  Now, no way is a computer going to tell me what kind of bed is best for me.  I will choose one that I like and feels best for me.  Next, using the computer data, she showed us the mattresses that fit the computer's description.  Of course, we were shown first the high priced mattresses.  Sorry, not in the budget for top of the line.  Next, we were shown the mid range(?) mattresses.  Did we like them?  Sure, they felt good, but, please, they are out of our budget.

She then informed us that we can get 0% financing for 1 year on the mattress of our choice.  We just told her we'd think about it, thanked her and left.  We did not want to pay a fortune for a mattress, financing or no financing.

Another type of salesperson we met up with was one that was there only when we needed him.  When we walked into the store, he greeted us and asked if we needed assistance.  We politely informed him that we were just looking, at which point he replied that if we had any questions, he'll be happy to assist us.  This is more the way we liked it.  We checked out the different mattresses and came across a couple that were in our budget and we liked.  We asked the salesperson a few questions, which he answered.  Not only did he answer our questions, he also gave us some useful information about the mattresses, which helped in our decision.

Just like salespeople, there are many different types of real estate agents out there.  Some are pushy, some do very little, some rude, and others will work in the interest of the buyer/seller and let them make the decisions.  If I were a consumer, I would personally go with the agent that educated me, worked in my best interest and let me make the final decisions.  It only make sense.  Which type of agent would you feel comfortable with?

I feel you cant sell a house, it sells itself either people like it or they dont, our job is to be there when they have questions and to help guide them in their decision making processes.

Isn't that the truth!  At least there are a few good salespeople around out there.  Those are the ones that will get to keep my business.

I agree with the other posters. I like someone to tell me about the product and to be close if I have any other questions regarding my purchase. Too pushy and I send them away.

Heather:

That is my point!  I have heard about some agents being a bit pushy to buyers that are taking their time.  I don't know if it's impatience or desperation.

Brigtia......I like one in the middle of the two..if I am really buying..if ai am just in the "looking phase, then I really do want just information...SOmetimes my wife and I are just killing time, but a good salesman can plant a seed..I know of one cell phone rep that has gotten piles of refferrals from me over the years..same with my yard guys...Good Post...Happy hunting for the perfect mattress..PS...a mattress is only expensive once...thats when you buy the wrong one..we have one we bought on price and put in the guest bedroom..after 6 months the sides were not holding up, the last one,  postupedic something, was 2x as much, but after 5 years still sleeps well..Just a thoght

We need to educate our buyers and sellers and provide the information they need to make the right decision.

There are people who are relational and those who are transactional.  Im always up for the guy / gal who's relational.  Always....

Oh I prefer the "there when you need them" types...pushy is so annoying. That is the same approach I take in real estate.

Dealing with the pushy, you can end up with something you didn't want in the first place.

I prefer the one who allows the customer to look. I will let them know if I need any help.  This is quite similar to the open houses I sit...go with them or stay put.  I choose the latter most times.

I remember when my husband and I purchased our mattress.  We were in the store a LONG time and the salesman was attentive, not pushy, asked us a few key questions and we bought a great mattress.  When I work with clients I try to listen, address key issues, and answer questions without being pushy.  Good post!

Latonia:

I like to look around first, myself.  Then if I need assistance, I will ask for it.  At that point, I can also receive any pertinent information I need.  I like to be informed before I buy.

Jennifer:

That is the best way to do it.  Be available for your client, find out their needs, yet let them decide.  They know what's is best for them.

Thanks!

Hey Brigita, I agree with you. How can you make a decision with a salesperson hovering over us? In our RE business I often times acknowledge to the couple that they need to talk and then walk away till they hail me. This works wonders. How's the mattress? You look rested. Deb

Debra:

I am with you!  I do the same thing with my buyers as you do.  Even though you are representing them, there are times you need to step back so they can talk privately.  After their discussion, they will inform you as to what they decided.  Hovering only makes them more uncomfortable.

BTW, feeling much better after a good night's sleep.  LOL

I'm not for the pushy salesperson...I know what I want and when I find it I will buy it! All I ask is that you are available to answer any questions I may have!

It's funny how salespeople don't want to be sold to!

Cris:

I think the majority do not like pushy sales people.  I agree with you.  They should just be available to answer questions and help when needed.
