Stonewall Jackson Elementary School is very highly regarded elementary school in the Dallas Texas Independent School District (Dallas ISD). Located on the south side of Lovers Lane between Matilda Street and Skillman, the school serves as a magnet school for Dallas ISD, providing education for all deaf students served by Dallas ISD. The deaf student population. I have been told that the deaf population represents about 10% of the total student population, but that everyone learns how to use American Sign Language. How cool is that?
To see a map of the attendance area, click on this link. Basically, the area served are Central Market Condos (Lovers Lane, Greenville, Skillman), then south of the Dart Track between Central Expressway7 and Abrams, crossing Mockingbird down to one of 3 streets, Vanderbilt, Merrimac or Llano.
Stonewall is very well known for its garden program. All you have to do to begin to appreciate the garden is to spend time at the stop light at Matilda and Mockingbird. You get to watch the children in the garden, learning about plants and life-cycles and vegetables up close.
The garden began about 15 years ago when a teacher decided to plan some green beans in one corner of the play ground. That garden has grown into a 20,000 sq ft outdoor learning center. Every child in Stonewall Jackson gets their very own garden plot. The children get to plant, cultivate and harvest their own crops.
And, now, the garden also has chickens. The garden was selected as a beneficiary of the East Dallas garden tour, "A Peep at the Coops", an opportunity to visit interesting urban farmer's backyard chicken coops. Some of the proceeds of that tour are donated to the Stonewall Jackson Garden. Another benefit from the tour was that a custom Hen House was built for the Stonewall Garden.
