One Thing Leads to Another....

By
Industry Observer

When it comes to house projects, you probably already know how one thing leads to another....and another....and then another.  I think we are in that cycle right now on our house.  We just had the roof replaced (likely in the nick of time since I'm not sure we would have made it through another winter without the risk of leaks developing).  Next up in a couple of days is new gutters - also a little bit overdue for replacement.

But gazing at the new roof, my husband and I both decided it makes our paint trim color look too bland.  OK....so now do we talk about painting the trim?  Painting the entire house??  That decision may become clearer when we have some contractors over this afternoon to give us an estimate on some siding repairs.  Oh and while they are at that estimate, maybe just also a bid on a new deck.  And you know what would be really fun is to see if they could build us a firepit in the yard... And....

Oops I think my husband is giving me THAT look!

I can relate to this story! It started with replacing the old linoleum floor with hardwood... then I painted the ceilings which made the walls look dingy so I painted four rooms, plus the bathroom... then I had to paint the clapboard on the front porch... now the trim and porch ceiling looks dingy.... Mind you, I have done all this myself except for the floors! I'm ready for a condo!

I hear ya, Nancy.  Seems when you own a home that repairs and updates run in cycles.  Marilyn and I are experiencing something very similar right now ...

So true!! I am sprucing up my house... for sale. And some of the things that have been done, should have been done long ago, so I could have enjoyed them!

Nancy, I feel your pain---have several multiplying projects on my own house---it is like it is contagious or something :)

LOL Judy - you DO know what I mean!  I was even briefly starting to think maybe we should just go ahead and redo one bathroom....Gave MYSELF the look over that idea!!

Exactly Gene - I knew this day would come because we have lived there almost 20 years - so everything is aging all at once!  Oops!

Hi Sandy - yes, our projects are partly ones that just need to be done, but others are with the goal of selling in a couple of years, so trying to weigh priorities and timing.

Thanks Kevin!  I'm blaming this on the fact that I've seen some beautful rehab jobs by these contractors, and then start thinking what we could do....oh my, hard to stay focused on the "must do's" only!

Hi Charles!  Maybe it's finally getting some sunshine here in the NW that is infecting us with the "fix up fever"...  you think?

Nancy, after being a builder for more than 30 years I have a pretty high tolerance for ignoring things :)

Hi Nancy, My hubby and I bought a little floating home last year. At first we said...it's not too bad, all we need is to replace the carpets and slap a coat of paint on the kitchen cabinets. Ha! Somehow we went from that though to totally gutting the house and doing a complete remodel. Yep..one thing sure does lead to another!

Or course you can't paint just the trim, that will make the rest of the house look bad.  And then when you paint the outside you will realize how badly the inside needs painting.  Then when you paint the inside you will realize....

Have fun.

I've had the same experience. So i learned the hard way to think of it like a chess game...what remolding move will uncover something in the process that leads to another move.

I suggest playing the game all the way through in your head and plan accordingly!

I am afraid to start some projects around the house for that very reason.

Sorry to be so slow to get back - thanks for all your comments!  We did have our favorite contractors over on Saturday to check out some more projects and do estimates for us - and I tried to rein myself in (well mostly) from getting totally crazy about redoing everything.  And likely once I get their estimates, I will rein in just a bit more - LOL.  But I do love our new roof!!

Nancy, How right you are! It seems that one project just opens a can of worms for another project.  Funny how that works.  Best of luck to you in getting all of your projects completed.

Thanks Sandy - I just saw another idea we could use in a house I showed yesterday. Quite possibly working in real estate is hazardous to the idea of ever actually being DONE with possible remodel projects! LOL
