pups on paroleAs some of you may know, we are very involved in animal rescue in the Las Vegas area. Several years ago we were watching a program called "cell dogs" about a training program in Carson City.  The inmates there were allowed to train and rehabilitate dogs as part of their rehabilitation.   We mentioned it to our friends at Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary.

They started their own version of the program at the Jean Women's correctional facility a few years ago. Today, they are also in the Southern Nevada Correctional Facilities as well. The inmates who apply and are accepted into the program, are taught to train the dogs.  The dogs that are rescued by HCWS are then assigned to an inmate and are given basic obedience, potty and leash training, not to mention re-building their trust in humans and self confidence.  Once the pup graduates from the program they are placed up for adoption.

The program has been a huge success and is a win-win, not only for the dogs but for the inmates as well. If you are thinking about adopting a dog, give Heaven Can Wait a call. Graduates are waiting for a forever home! -Charles

That is awesome!

Would it be ironic that I love my dog, and he is, infact an inmate?

Chris- it is a growing trend those plate snatchers! I have one on probation and about to be sent to the "yard" for the same crime. I think it is due to his addiction to stealing toilet paper when I leave the house- he claims it is anxiety- I beg to differ. His therapist reports dogs these days have become over stimulated with table scraps which boost their egos. If he cant be rehabed his ego can encourage him to hunt small game animals to satisfy his cravings. I have warned the neighbor whos cats prowl our yard like night security.  It is tough being a dog these days!  :-)Chris-  Hoping your fella atleast makes it to the work release program soon!

I was wondering what "Pups on parole" was, how very cool! I saw a program on Animal Planet about inmates training dogs and it was amazing. Its a real good thing we don't live in the same place, I'd be in so much trouble! (just had to put out 600 for kitty surgery this week, my youngest developed FUS, so have to put doggie adoption plans on hold for awhile)

Charles, what a great thing.  I have no idea how you have time to be involved in all this though. I ponder this question every day when I'm trying to get things done.
